I am looking for some imput, I currently own a 1996 JD 955 4WD,HST, 70A loader with 60" bucket,60" mid mount mower and turf tires,that I've loaded with windshield washer fluid(this will not rust your rims). The tractor I bought new and it currently has 350 hours on. I am thing of selling this tractor and looking at the JD 4400,4WD, HST, 430 loader with the 61" HD bucket, 60" mid mount mower and turf tires. Basically I am thinking of upgrading and I don't know if this is a good move. My tractor is in excellant shape, the only reason I am considering this, is I wish I had more lifting capacity with the loader and I feel my loader is a little slow. I like the actual physical size of my 955, so I am not looking for a physically larger tractor, just stronger and quicker. I was quoted a price of $24350.00 for the JD 4400 4WD,Hyro,Turf Tires, 430 Loader with 61" HD bucket, Bucket level Indicator and a 60" mid mount mower on a straight deal, no trade. Also, what is my tractor worth if I sold it out right? and what is it worth if I was to trade it in? Any imput is greatly appreciated. Thanks John

John have you tried the 4400 with loader? What is the lift capacity of the 70 against the 430? I think the hydraulics are a bit more on the 4400(my book is at work). Also look into adding a larger hydraulic pump to your 955...For under $1000 upgrade, you may transform your unit to stay for another 10 or 20 years.

Hillbilly, I've been running regular ladder chains on all 4 ag tires. I'm chaining up the front to help with steering, and I've not seen a post from anyone yet whose blown up their front end from running chains or studs up there. My problem is that the cross links all fall between the lugs on the tires. It is impossible to keep then on top. I've tried both the keep'em tight and the keep'em loose methods. Since the tires are pretty new, the lugs are taller than the chain, so the chain doesn't get much bite. My opinion is that they offer little to no extra traction above the ag tires. I'm plowing snow on a north slope hill that stays icy all winter. Nothing says pucker up like a tractor losing traction, (even with chains), and sliding and spinning down the hill. With R4s, you may have better luck keeping the chains up where they'll do some good. I'm looking into some better options, namely Trygg Tractor TS and Babac. Both companies make tire chains for the forestry industry. Trygg chains are made in Canada and Norway (I think). Babac chains are made in the USA. Both brands have studs welded to the chain, and both place a mesh of chain over the lugs as opposed to just cross links between the side chains. Both companies will make chains to whatever size you need, so if you decide to chain up the front (which will be a non-stock size for compact tractors) you'll be able to get what you want. You can check out Trygg chains at www.whitemountainchain.com. Its in Idaho, contact there is Eddie at 800-439-9073. For Babac chains, check out www.wallingsford.com. Look under Babac "forwarder" chains. They also carry ICC chains; there's an ICC chain that is a dead ringer for Trygg brand (its shown under Hydraulic Tractor Winch/ICC Farm.... These chains will be more expensive than regular ladder chains; neighborhood is $600 plus $100 shipping for all four wheels (11.2-24 and 7-14). Another option recommended by Murf is ice screws used for motorcycle ice racing. They look like sheet metal screws and you just screw them into the lugs. They're 7 cents per screw for the regular steel ones or 70 cents per screw for the carbide tipped ones. Hope this helps. - Jeff

I was at my John Deere dealer yesterday and saw a JD790 MFWD, 2001 Model, about the size of a JD4300, new for $10,600. I thought that was a lot of bang for the buck! I like Iseki (Isuzu engines)that makes the MF1200 series, but think MF is too pricey. John Deere has a promotion on the 790 and also 6.9% financing for 60 mo.

The first quote is in on my barn project and I need some good input. I believe this will end up being the best price as well. It is from the Mennonite builders. $21,500 for 40'x60'x14'high. Framed for two overhead doors and including two entrance doors and windows. This also includes laminated poles and a partitioned 20'x40' shop with metal ceiling and storage above. All cement work is included as well. Haven't heard from Morton yet. The price sounds good to me, but I'm no expert on this type of thing.

Do you mean the cover for the splined shaft (shaft cap)or the little fold up shield (cover)? My 2710 w/o folding ROPS has the cover and the cap. (no cap on the mid pto though)In fact it IS pointed out in the yellow safety sheets in front of the owners manual as "KEEP THE PTO SHAFT COVER ON AT ALL TIMES" so I would say you should have one on it. Got 44 hours on mine and love it. The sad part is that 24 of those hours are moving cold snow!

It looks like you've gotten a GREAT quote on the B7500. Maybe it's just the area of the country I'm in, but I got a quote of $15,000 on the B7500HSD with turfs, 54" Kubota mid-mount mower, and FEL. I'm jealous.<br>

I had an Arps (National Loader) on my Satoh S650G, excellent quality. I didn't know they were still in business. I have two rakes, both Leinbach, 7 & 8' with gauge wheels, new $450/$500 w/o wheels. (wheels about $180.) We have York and Modern(same) in our area and the quality is equal if not better. Get some other quotes and look around so you have a "reference".

I had a Massey Ferguson 135 with a trip bucket loader. Just plain 2 wd, I had no other reference and thought I was in heaven. I used it mainly for brush hogging, protecting the sheet metal on the tractor and ripping the tough stuff out of my way (had manure forks mounted on bucket)with a 5' rotary cutter mounted on the rear.

I also had a Satoh S650G w/ loader, full double action bucket (moving up in the world folks) and that little 25 hp was a can do tractor, all in 2wd!

Well years later, I recently bought a John Deere 5202 MFWD with loader and 90% of the time it's still in "2wd".

So yes, a 2wd tractor can work great with a loader!

Joe, you've undoubtedly seen the "triangle" ramps on the back end of larger trailers. They're attached to the back end of the trailer and fold either straight upright, or on forward to lay over onto the back end of the trailer, but when let down for use, you have the sloped ramp you drive up, but the bottom is flat on the ground. That makes them solid and negates the need for jack stands or other support under the back end of the trailer to keep the weight of the tractor from pushing the back end down as you drive on. Whew, there's gotta be a better way of describing them, but I can't think of better words right now.

In your gravel moving pictures, you say the ROPS is folded down because you couldn't get into the shed with it up. Why was the ROPS down in the mud pictures? Was leaving it down the dumbest thing that you wouldn't tell about? I can't believe that so many people don't think "SAFETY". Our local newspaper lists all arrests and accidents. The amount of people mentioned that don't use seatbelts is unbelievable. HEY YOU ALL OUT THERE. WORK SAFELY!!

I hope your still around eric, I just read your posting. I looked into the
flexi planters to mount behind my 5' rototiller. I Know they are very versatile
as you can buy plates for it that will distribute seeds from tomatoes to potatoes, I remember they got very pricy. Right now I tow a jd 290 planter
(old iron) for corn and beans, its a two row planter, with the flexis I could
plow and in another pass rototill and plant three rows at the same time. look
for used ones at veggie, potato, or sugar beet farms. I found that 290 planter
at the neighbors for $100 compared to about $2000 for two used flexis and the
tool bar it takes to mount to a 3pt.

I've modified all of my battery boxes to fit a standard automotive 12 volt battery. Any automotive type has plenty of cranking amps. My favorite is the Optima Red Top, which I run in everything. The one in my JD is 10 years old this year and still going strong. The Optima is slightly smaller than other batteries and this helps when space is tight. Maybe one will fit right in the existing space.

If the engine has a bunch of hours on it, you might want to run a compression test on it--especially if it's a bit hard to start or misfires at start up. Below is a list of causes for lack of power or speed from my repair manual: Incorrect throttle adjustment, incorrect maximum no load speed, fuel starvation, air in system, incorrect timing [pump], low compression, incorrect engine timing. Hope you already found the problem before reading this. You would need a manual to check out some of the things on the list.

I bought the 62 inch model from my kubota dealer. He also had a Meteor and a LuckNow. These were nicer. I paid 1365 for it. I needed it to clear a 150' path to my well which is going to be drilled down from 705' to about 1100' next week. On my B2710, it had no trouble moving 18" of settled Vermont snow. It was 24 inches a week ago and we haven't had any thaws.
If I hadn't tied lexane to the ROPS, it would also be easy to adjust the manual shute, now it's a reach around the plexiglass unless I take off the seatbelt, but it still turns easier than any other model I tried. These are worth looking at for anyone interested.
