Both will be good tractors. Shop dealers and make sure that you find a good one. You will most likely need service at some point and saving a couple hundred dollars on the purchase is not worth the stress when you need service.

As far as size, I have a 4100 with 5 acres. I would be comfortable with it on 10 acres. These small tractors can do soooo much! I would expect that your choices would be plenty.

DSCV: They can either be loader outlets, or sometime they can be rear outlets. JD calls DSCV for the loader, then offers, I think, a third, fourth, and fifth which are rear outlets. These would be for implements that have hydraulic cylinders on them, like a back blade with hydraulic blade adjustment. These can always be added at anytime. I think the dealer just adds them on the tractor before delivery anyway. If your pretty sure about a loader get the valves for it with the tractor. If you are unsure about rear outlets, wait.

Jim, I agree with Vince. You can get a 25 HP Kioti for $10,000 more or less. I'm not real sure what Kubota's are but I'm positive it is >$500 difference in my area. These Kioti's look like very sturdy machines. I may purchase one myself. Check out Kioti.com for some prices.

I think you will find that a great deal of small roots will be still quite difficult to pull out, certainly a rake will not budge them, and a box-blade with scarifiers will merely 'comb' them into laying in the same direction, but not pull them out. Best bet would be to roto-till the heck out of the place, with pto running at 1000 rpm, after a few passes at 540rpm if possible. This will cut as many of them off a few inches below the surface as possible. Then grade with the box-blade, and rake out the debris. Best of luck.

As I was taught when I was young (all in my family are pilots), it's NOT the fall that hurts, it's the sudden stop at the bottom that gets you!!!!! This is especially true with land-based equipment, falling from 8'ish feet up in a loader bucket doesn't sound too bad, having the loader land on top of you sounds real bad... Try to operate equipment with 'Murphy's Law' in mind (anything that can go wrong, will, usually at the worst possible moment. Best of luck, and BE CAREFUL!!

Mike S. Sorry, I can't use two at the same time. Sounds like yours was a real lemon and no fun at all. But if you have new brakes, new transmission, etc. as listed, you should get a good price or trade-in, as these tractors are in high demand and have great resale value. Once bitten, twice shy, and nobody would blame you for trying another color. But given the huge success of the JD 4000 series, I'm guessing that most owners have an experience more like mine than like yours.

I'm not sure you need the full 22 feet. Here is how I have helped do it. Use the loader with an extension to get the truss up to its support. At this point the trusses are upside down. Then used the extension on the loader to help roate the truss to upright direction. This method eliminates the need to have the extension on the loader to be long enough to hold the full weight of the truss upright in position. Hope this helps.

If the arm is like that on a 4300 all you have to do is lift the "wing" up and give it a half turn and set it down. The pins in the shaft fit inside the wings and the notch at the bottom of the wing lines up with the bumbs at the top of the lower part of the shaft. Hard as heck to describe, especially without using your hands, but easy to do.

Hey guys,
i too have the 4400 that has the new axel. it has been a joy to work with and own.......now. prior i was not too happy about the whole axle thing, but the tractor performed great. By the way, this is the second 4400 that i owned, the first one the dealer bought back at my cost and got me 4600 that i turned down because of the size of it. I ended up taking another 4400 that was a newer model and it has been great. the first 4400 had too many probs and i just didn't trust it. it had all the problems Mike has described, and then some. anyway, i had 3 deeres prior and they were good machines so i gave them the benefit of the doubt and tried another one. I'm glad i did. hope everyone else gets the best out of their dealer, i think that is the weak link in the chain. good luck.

Not sure what sort of information you are looking for, but I too am a woman and enjoy my little tractor alot. Have been using it for grading, clearing, augering, some back hoeing, digging and etc.. It is one handy tool and kind of a neat passtime to be out by yourself. I assume this is what you are talking about and congratultation for still being active and having fun :)

Bob, JimBinMI and I disagree on which is the best tractor brand (they're both darned good ones, of course), but you've got the right idea. A good dealer is probably more important than the brand.

Andy, I see you have no replies about your mower. I don't have a mower, but I just bought a 56" tiller. From what I see looking at other tillers I'd say the Caroni is very well built. Never tried it yet, but will this fall. If the quality of the mower is anything like the tiller I would not worry about it's durability.

I am located in south-central Michigan and purchased the same mower, with my NH TC18 tractor last summer for $1,300 without a rear guard. I recently purchased the rear chain guard from the same dealer for $79. I don't know what a good used price would be for you though, sorry. Just wanted to let you know that they can be bought at other prices, but maybe not in your area. Have you checked with the place you're buying the larger mower from, will they give you a decent trade in...you never know.

New, this tractor sells for $12,000 - $13,000. Don't know the used value, but if undamaged, the depreciation would be very little (at least this is what I found when I bought mine in January).

When I had my 1530 NH, it was inoperative in cold weather. It has the same technology as a hood or liftgate prop on a car/truck utilizing a gas charged cylinder to lock the tilt mechanism. One day when I went to make the adjustment, the rod that enters the top of the cylinder (what you can see looking down on the cylinder) blew the seal and shot pressurized fluid on my face. Luckily I had my glasses on or it would have been in my eyes sure enough. (the fluid sprayed out in one very quick spurt, and I would never have had enough time to blink) It was still in warranty at that time, so it didn't cost to have it fixed. Just glad I didn't lose my eyesight. I still think that rod mechanism should have some kind of shield over it to deflect the oil from spraying on anyone else. This is a very real life situation and I would like to warn other people to think twice about leaning/looking downwards at that mechanism when tilting the wheel on the baby boomers if it still is built that way.

I just had my 4200 hystat in the shop, and one of its symptoms was the extreme
growling noise in reverse. The solution for me was a new transmission. They
said that one of the bearings was bad and another going bad.

I can't say if this has anything to do with your problem, but is worth considering.
