My JD4300 seems to make a growling sound when the tractor starts to move, mostly in reverse, but it has also made it going forward. The tractor has had the hardened pinion shim modification done, so it shouldn't be that. I had thought it was the brakes draging, but applying pressure to the brakes doesn't make a difference. I think it is the clutch, but with 40 hours the clutch should not be noisy. Has anyone else seen this problem with a JD4300 with a syncro-reverser transmission?

I also have the same problem, The noise is only heard when letting the clutch out in a reverse geer. The tractor is a 4300, 2000 year model. I have around 250 hrs on it now and the noise just keeps getting worse. I called my John Deere dealer about the problem and has made an appointment to work on it next week. After talking to him about the problem, he has no idea of what is causing the noise. If anyone else has had this problem and had it fixed or know what is cousing it, PLEASE respond. Other than the noise, I have had no other problems with the tractor.

I just had my 4200 hystat in the shop, and one of its symptoms was the extreme
growling noise in reverse. The solution for me was a new transmission. They
said that one of the bearings was bad and another going bad.

I can't say if this has anything to do with your problem, but is worth considering.
