I have been pulling quite a bit of logs with my tractor. You do have to be careful but I have been quite surprised at what it can do. A chain will fly when broken if...it is fastened to something elastic or with it's own momentum.
For instance if it is attached to a winch and it snaps the winch suddenly goes to no load on a maximum pull and propels the chain. If it is connected to the bumper hitch of a car and the car is moving forward...jerking it will also propel the chain. The key is acceleration. if there is no acceleration the chain will not propel. So keep the pulls slow and steady. But also be aware that there may be an elastic momentum somewhere in the line of pull. It is a good idea to put something with some weight on top of a chain that you are pulling to lessen the danger of it flying when broken. One thing I have not done but have thought about doing is threading the first ten feet of a pulling chain through a length of pvc pipe.

One other method of pulling something heavy and worrisome...or sometimes to break something out is to use the bucket roll on your loader. If you have chain grabs on your loader you can chain the tractor to tree and inch the drag using the roll on your bucket....roll back...rehook chain...roll back...rehook chain...roll back...rehook chain. It can be slow but can be done off the tractor in relative safety.

In case anyone is interested, I borrowed a 5' Ford bush hog from my neighbor and the TC29D handled it easily. It is much less of a load than my 6' finish mower. I was cutting grass that was higher than the hood of the tractor and thick, and it was no problem. I was also able to mow up a very steep hill (steep enough that I had trouble keeping the front wheels on the ground!) and the tractor handled it with no problem. I didn't try it in brush, since it was a borrowed mower, but I'm sure I won't have any trouble.

I asked my mechanic a similar question last week, and he told me that the "new" spec was 1/4" movement on the cylinder every minute. It the cylinder rod travel was less than 1/4" per minute the unit was within spec for new. For used, he indicated that about double that would still not affect operation.
However, if there is any visible leakage from the cylinder around the rod, he recommended repacking that immediately.

WHO ARE YOU? Not to be offensive, but "Mr. Agwholesaler" doesn't tell me much. I don't recall you participating in any of the forums. Of course I may have just missed them. I do recall that you posted a similar commercial advertisement a month or so ago.
Has anyone on this tractor forum bought anything from you? I'm trying not to sound too harsh, but I don't think that it is unreasonable to ask for some references about now.

Sounds like we bought pretty much the same tractor. The 'S' stands for standard. Mine also has a 9x3 and--I'd guess like yours--the shifter is not on the floor but up by the steering wheel. What state are you located in? What kind of tires did you get? What do you use the tractor for?

Elkoboy, I agree with the prior posts, but have to add that post hole diggers are the worst. My solution was to chain the auger to the wall of my barn and hang the boom or top link from a specially constructed stand also attached to the walls. A hand winch allows me to raise or lower the top link for linking or unlinking to the tractor. When not in use, a portable stand helps holds the bottom links at the level where the tractor can back up and link with minimal height adjustment. With this relatively simple to built set-up, one person can link or unlink this post hole digger, and feel somewhat safe with various ropes and chains holding it in place until the final pin puts the tractor in control. After reading similar posts to the ones above, I thought about this problem for months before finally deciding how to solve it--and at least it works for me. All said, I've never heard anyone say post hole diggers are easy to link up. Best of luck.

Al, I used square wood blocks, raised the front to releave pressure on tire, placed blocks. After removing the wheels, dropped the front out. Then took the new crate down to the base, slid the new unit under tractor, used handy man jack, removed the block, put my floor jack back under then I could lower into place. The unit came complete with the bolsters, new bolts, etc. You then have to adjust the center pin adjuster. I could probably do another one with a little less time, I just didn't get into rush. Works like a charm. Dealer gave me couple gallons of oil. My dealer is a super guy. He said there were 170 requests for front now. Front end is entirely different than the old set up. It is much like the one I had on my 870. The control value is 100 instead of 80 on the old one. Whatever that means. I took the old assy back to the dealer as he might be able to sell some parts off it. If you want any more information please advise.

I appreciate your opinions, Rick, and think I have deduced the line of work you are in. I'll look and see if the Carraro or the NH stamp is on the axles. The rear was where I saw it b4, did not look on the front. The PA dealer was one who told me about the common sourcing, and my extensive digital photo array confirms that the JD 5410 and NH TN's have similar looking rear axles. Stands to reason using even a small part of my brains that the front Supersteer axle & mechanism would be unique of course.

Rick, do you think the capacity of the SS axle on the NH TN (full-size) is appreciably different from the TNF? Although I did not take measurements, an eyeball survey again indicates they are about the same physical size and heft. I have a digital picture I could send you of the 2 side by side in front. Of course the steering mechanism does not show as well--I wonder how different it is.

Your comments on the effects of trackwidth go at least a little over my head because of some of the terminology, but I think I read that my previous conclusion is wrong, particularly with regard to steering and related components. I suppose I was thinking more of the rear axle, but your leveraging comment makes sense.

One other interesting and relevent (to this discussion) thing about Alo is their Soft Drive accessory. It purports to "soften" the hard connection between loader and the tractor/terrain using what appears to be hydraulic dampening. A graph showing the effect on load amplitude (ie, jouncing) over a time line as the tractor is driven over a rough surface, is dramatic. If it works as advertised, it should reduce stress on steering and related components, particularly at high load weights and during turns. Alo even claims it reduces operator fatigue during extended loader work.

Although I love it because it fascinates the TimTheToolman in me, I really wonder how well all this technology goes over in the small Ag market, and I mean supersteer, auto engage FWD as well as the Quicke starships. What do you think?

Even with that fancy stuff, I am not inclined to pay a premium price for Alo over Woods (who specs their Model 1027 for the F tractor) unless I can get the reach, more so than weight, I want. It is not yet clear to me whether Alo's issue with the loader model for the TNS vs the TNF is based on safety considerations (ie, tractor upset due to the narrower width) or on capacity of tractor components. Your comments are carefully noted and I appreciate them greatly. I hope to learn more on Monday when I (1) confirm that NH will not void my warranty for installing a loader per se, and (2) discuss things with the area Quicke rep again.

I used to have a 1995 B7100HSD that I bought new with a B1630C loader. And while I don't know for sure, the dealer told me that a belly mower could be used with the loader (the loader was not a quick attach). However, he said the earlier models could not. But I never used the tractor with a finish mower of any kind. I did use a 4' Bush Hog SQ48 rotary cutter and was very happy with it, but I don't think it would have handled a 5' one very well.

find a dealer that handles gannon equipment.i had that setup put on a 335 in 1978.gannon has dedicated setups for several different tractors.a friend bought one for a kubota 4200 series a couples years ago.the cylindres were even painted kubota green from the factory.they put the controls in the slots on the tractor and it really looks good.i've had experience with other brands,but in my opinion gannon is the best.i have yet to put one on my boomer but i probably will.if you do this go the whole nine yards and get the tilt cylinder too.mijne has the three spole valve for the link,tilt,and also the scarifiers.good luck.

Damon, Ya that was my corny idea. But was based on the fact that I have a Farmi winch for winching and skidding logs. It has a guard mounted to the back of it with expanded metal as the protective screen area. The guard separates the driver seat area from where the action is happening and is approx. the size of the ROPS. Cable is capable of spring back or launching an object at the operator if he's in the operators seat, although I rarely sit there when winching. It's also wise to secure the cable on a lower pulley for this and other reasons when skidding. I think yours is a good idea. I do try not to make permanent alterations to my own tractors with the exception of the bucket (I weld the heck out of it for all sorts of things).

Does anyone have a serial# list of the loaders recalled. Are they 420thru 460's
or just one size. I have a new 430 sitting at the dealership which I ordered. I'm just waiting for the JD fork attachment to arrive. I would like to check the numbers before purchasing. I would still purchase it but may choose to have him do the installation. I was planning to install it. Has anyone done it this way. If I do install it and it falls off the dealer probably wouldn't cover any damage or liability. The other hand is that I don't own a trailer or if I did, my pickup would not be able to haul it anyway. Do they ever come onsite for installations such as this?

I ran the 1070 for an hour yesterday and didn't notice any change in oil level or leakage in general. As for the dealer, he is a used dealer, a farmer who buys and sells compacts for a side income. The machine was bought "as is". This is always risky business but the last JD w/ low hrs I bought turned out to be worth every penny. Would I like a new machine, with a warranty? Of course! Can I realisticly afford it? No way. I don't like the risk involved but this person buys tractors, not at auction, but from individuals or from rental companies that have a maintenance crew. He doesn't doctor up his inventory. He doesn't even wash them. This makes me believe that, if no visible leak occurs, it probably, hopefully is, as you suggest. I'll let you know if it turns out differently. Thanks Eric in NH

stvman, I wouldn't want to chain my B2710 to my cousin's TC29 for a pulling contest because I wouldn't want him to be disappointed in that New Holland. That'd be like when we were stupid teenagers and always have to have a race everytime either of us changed cars to see who was the fastest.

Seriously, the features I like best about my Kubota are the pedals, both placement and having rubber pads (personal preference; some like the New Holland arrangement better), the ease and convenience of removing and replacing the front end loader (New Holland ain't bad, but I don't like those bungee cords to hold those long hoses), the location of the loader joystick (it's in the way of getting on or off the right side on the TC29), placement of the taillights (B2710 inside the ROPS and TC29 outside - more exposed to get damaged or knocked off), I like my armrests on the seat (they were optional on the TC29 and he didn't get them). Some of the things I like better about the TC29 are the fact that it seems quieter than my B2710 (we've never had them together so I can't say for sure), the knobs on the ends of the levers are shaped better to fit my hands, the wheels are bigger, telescoping ends on the 3-point lower links, tilt wheel (which is a good idea, but since I like my B2710 where it is, I don't need it), a swivel seat, the cruise control is better on the TC29, and unfortunately, I even think blue is a prettier color than orange (of course color never enters into my decision on what to buy).

In other words, it's mostly personal preference. I bought my first Kubota because of price and "feel" and when I traded up, I stayed with Kubota because of the good service I got from the first one. My cousin was about to buy a Kubota, but I told him to look at all 3; Kubota, John Deere, and New Holland, and he found that a ex-coworker of his wife was selling New Hollands, and he liked the guy and bought from him.

Bought my Yanmar 4wd w/factory loader from the dealer in 1981 or 82. It was a demo with 20 hours on it. I've used it as my miniature construction machine - doing excavation mostly through gravel and rock. Several foundations, a road, a pond, landscaping, clean corrals, 4 cords of firewood each year, re-route a small creek...things like that. I don't mow with it. It needed brakes after a few years. The shoes had worn out because the drums were moisture pitted. Yanmar provided the parts and labor for free - even though it was out of warranty.
In 1988 I re-upholstered the seat. In 1988 it needed a new battery. A few years ago I put in the third battery.
Other than oil and filters once every year or two that is all. It never has needed any other new parts. It doesn't leak or use any oil. By now it is a member of the family.
