Well, I just found out that the local Steiner dealer might be picking up the Venture Products line as well. At least he is considering it. This would make for an interesting decision when I decide to buy my next tractor.

I've been on the scuff board and am waiting on my new front end. The dealer advised that the factory is sending, however I have encountered another problem that could be an accident situation. Was mowing today and noted that the lift would not work...in examining the control bracket had loosened from the lift arm on the left side. Upon future examination I noticed that it was held on by an e key and the lift is very small. If this arm pops off the lift will fall. I drilled a hole and put a kotter key with washer. This is a riskey item. Please check yours.

Need help in finding a regulator for a Shibaura SP 1540. The number on the old one is RS 5101. It is a 12 v type<br>Has a 6 pronged harnes coming off of it. I thought my alternator was bad but turned out fine. <br>I tested the leads to the alternator from the regulator and got a .1 volt reading. How can I test the regultor, or is that what I have done<br>with the .1 volt reading. This all started with my battery light on my dash lighting up and going off occaisionally. <br>Lately it hasa stayed on. Have already replaced trhe battery. This made <br>the light go off for a while. Tracto runs without the regulator but isn't charging since<br>my alternator is disconnected. Thanks

On paper it looks like the 2710 is slightly better. The 4200 is pricier. A 4100 is closer in price but the 2710 blows that one away (on paper). I will do mostly loader/driveway work. Possably mowing in a few years. The ???'s are to you current users, how do they compare? likes/dislikes? serviceability? Any help for a first time buyer.

Bill, thanks for the tip. I hope it doesn't come to that. I think dropping the antifreeze mixture helped a bunch. I'll find out tomorrow when I have to hook up the tiller again. Thanks, Tod.

YOU CAN ALSO CHECK THE RADITIOR CAP IF IT IS OLD IT WILL LOWER THE BOILING POINT OF THE WATER AND CAUSE OVERHEATING REPLACE IT WITH A NEW CAP AND TRY THAT THAT SYSTEM IS VERY EFFECTIVE WAY OF COOLING THE ENGINE VERY FEW PROBLEMS

THE VANGAURD ENGINE IS PUT OUT BY BRIGGS THAT ENGINE IS A GOOD ENGINE LOTS OF POWER YOU DEALER IS CORRECT IN YOU CAN RUN THAT ENGINE AT FULL THROTTLE 3500RPMS I AM A EQUIPMENT DEALER AND HAVE SOLD A FEW OF THESE MOTORS AND THEY RUN AT 3600-3700RPM . RUN THEM ALL DAY AT FULL THROTTLE YOU SHOULD HAVE NO PROBLEM. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS JUST POST THEM I WIL TRY TO ANSWER THEM.

You are sure welcome. Enjoy the M; not too many of them out there. Amazing that a 50 year old tractor can still work all day just about like when it was new. On mine I cut a section out of the line from the tank to the float bowl and put in an aftermarket filter from NAPA. I do this on all old machinery and it helps a bunch. The other thing I had to do to my JD M was to take the throttle apart and clean up the friction clutch there so that the lever would stay where I put it. An easy and satisfying job. Then I put all new rubber parts and new springs into the hydraulic lift control. That made quite the difference, but took a couple of evenings to get it taken apart and cleaned and back together. That might have been the point where I ordered the parts and service manual from JD. Expensive but worth it.

I have a 2500 Yanmar and I am pleased with it,overall.I have had a few problems with it,one possibly major so far,but I think I have that fixed.Parts have not been a big problem,although I haven't needed anything but filters (I get them from NAPA)If you buy one,by all means,get a warranty!!! It might not be for 5 yrs/50000 miles,but in six months you will find out if there is anything wrong with it.If you want more info from someone who has been there,done that email me and we'll talk.
As for the Chinese machines I can't find ANYONE who thinks they are a good bet.Ask around you'll see...

Danny, I use chains on my turf tires when I want extra traction. It works just as well as you think that it would for increasing ptraction. You can leave the chains on most of the time if you want....the tractor doesn't wear them or the tires like an automobile does. My first set were made from old car chains, and give a very bouncy ride. I made a set for my other tractor using an "X" pattern instead of the common automotive pattern, and this gives a much nicer ride. Traction is about the same either way. I wouldn't want anymore traction. I think it is good that a tire can slip if it needs to so because this protects the rest of the running gear.

Congratulations on the 790! They sure are nice tractors. You will want some sort of ballast. An implement on the back works pretty will, but sometimes it is just too big to be handy. I like to use a box blade. They are close to the rear wheels and there are plenty of places on a box blade to hang extra weight if you want to do so..Then if you make a plywood top for it You have a dandy portable work bench too. Every once in a while I even use it to move dirt.

Jack D. - could you please e-mail me. I would like some additional information about the process used by your dealer to rectify your situation. I am trying to resolve an issue I have with my JD and feel like I'm getting no where fast. The dealer claims to be working on it for me. However, it has been over three weeks since I told him what I would like to have happen and in those three weeks he has only given me an update if I call him. Thanks in advance.

Some of you may have noticed that the CTB has had some outages recently, for several hours at a time.<br><br><br>These outages have happened due to some problems at the CTB's Web Hosting company.<br><br><br>I have put in trouble reports as soon as these outages have occurred. And today spoke with a managment represnetative, and they agreed to investigate the outages more closely.<br><br><br>In addition I have put some extra tracking software in place on the CTB.<br><br><br>I know these outages are frustrating, but please be patient. Much of what is dark grey was rusted.(just starting to come through in most areas). All the control pedals were completely rusted, the dealer changed them after I saw it and said something about it (I bought the machine sight unseen, it came from their distribution center). Some other areas were rusty and I have been cleaning and painting here and there. The implements are not too bad, they were in a box. The dealer has been SUPER, I am fortunate to have selected him. I would recommend them to anyone. The wire harness fell off where it is glued to the hood on the inside. The rubber gasket used to seal the compartment was ripped. The dealer was going to take one off another tractor but they were ALL ripped in the installation process at the assembly plant. The first time I went to use it, it wouldn't start(dealer came and made repair). I had a bad hydro hose that blew out the first try with the loader (dealer came and made repair). The first try with the mower deck and the gear box is grinding itself apart (trying to get NH to replace it). The machine is VERY comfortable and well thought out. I'm just one of those people that takes exceptional care of their equipment, and to start out with all this mess is very frustrating. Especially considering what they charge for these things.

Paul, I don't have a 790 but I am starting a new lawn buisness. I started by getting buisness cards and just stopping at new houses that need grass planted. I chose this way and not the yellow pages so I could control the amount of buisness I have coming in so as not to get in over my head. So far so good, I did run a ad in the local paper for one day,because it was a spring, yard, and garden special edition. I haul my tractor (4600 JD) with a 16' 10,000# capacity. Your not the first to spot this sight. I've seen it quite a few times as well. OMO, and based strictly from having both R4s and Turfs on our 4100, the front turfs and R4s are almost identical in diameter. It is ok for fronts to slightly overdrive the rears, but not vise vera. This may be a problem.. Because the R4s are very rigid and therefore vary little in size. A Turf tires diameter can be altered slightly through air pressure. In this situation, the rears may be overdriving the fronts. NOW.. To be the devil's advocate. I can tell you right now my fronts will be bald long before my rears are even so much as half worn.
Between turning, loader use and what must be about 2-3 revolutions up front for every revolution of the rears.

Lastly, the unit is fairly light compared to farm tractors, and doubtful its drivetrain has seen stresses associated with pulling a plow, harrow, etc.
The only advantage, is an R4s higher weight rating and wear charactoristics....minus the cost of buying a rear set of rims and tires.
This cost "may" show up somewhere else down the road...
