At low idle speeds( standstill, everything in neutral) the RPM slows down and then picks back up.It kind of oscillates a very little bit, not severe. Something only an owner would notice. It is possible that I am idling it too low. <br>Anybody have anything to suggest, either in a direction to look, or in the proper idle RPM speed?<br>When I increase the RPM it is steady.

Yep, hydraulics of all kinds squeal in cold weather. I've wondered about this myself and don't know exactly why. Don't think I've ever heard of any failure directly because of this. I do give mine a long warm-up on general principles.
As far as leaving it plugged in: The block heater is no different than the heating element in an electric hot water heater (except it is lower wattage). But hot water heaters also have a thermostat that turns the heating element off when the water begins to get too hot. As far as I know, none of the block heaters have this feature - an oversight by the designers for sure. It may be that they are relying on the fact that the block heater is low wattage and you do get some thermosiphon cooling through the radiator. I'd be cautious leaving it plugged in, or better yet, add some sort of thermostat to the system. Then you could leave it plugged in indefinitely.

Whats the correct name for these beasts TAFT or TAFE ? The web site http://www.tafe.com is for Tractors And Farm Eguipment company. But http://www.taft.com is a web site asking the name of Dr. Neergaard's wife. Since i dont know the answer to that i typed some random chracters and it returned me back to the home page. I think its a password of some kind. Not a tractors web site.

Has anyone heard anything about the recall on the mounting hardware for the madel 48 backhoe. The adapter plates may fail if the attaching hardware becomes loose. Has anyone had this problem and have they come up with a cure for it as of yet? Been waiting to hear from the dealer about it. Thanks Gary

Ross, do your 4400 front tires scuff badly? I test drove 2 different 4400 HST's last weekend at two different dealers. The first one scuffed unacceptably in 2wd or 4wd, forward or reverse, fairly shallow turns. I also think it had been on the lot for awhile. The second unit I drove had just arrived the previous week and hardly scuffed at all even in sharp turns in 4wd. The surface was packed snow on asphalt so I was able to see any slippage that occurred. This second unit was certainly acceptable, met my expectations, and comparable to other 4wd tractor's behavior (with possible exception of NH super steer - never tried that one on packed snow). I'd be interested to see posts from other 42-43-4400 recent buyers to see if the situation is improving or not.

RCH, you could've used a stopwatch. (You talked me into it.) Ed, it depends on the store. Several of the NAPA stores in my area carry it. But a number of dealers I know sell it for less. Some of them (like me) even sell it at cost. BTW, RCH, what did you expect me to say? ;>)

Dennis I have a PTO shaft with slip clutch that went on a JD 54in tiller it may be possible to make it work, I had the tiller on a JD 445 and then later purchased 4400 tractor and instead of making the shaft longer and changing the yoke on front of shaft I bought a new one, you can contact me by phone at 864-599-1999 8 :00-4:00pm M-F if your interested.

Fortunate I found out about disel gelling before winter. So far, the additives
seem to work and we've broke -20 F.

One thing I'm not clear on is if gelled disel ungells when it get warmer. We're expected to be in the neighbourhood of -30 F the next couple of days. I put a can of fuel in the basement just to be sure I'd have something clear and liquid. I'd just as soon not keep 10 gal of disel in the basement if all I have to do is warm it up.

I'll go along with both Brent and Tom. To paraphrase both of their explanations, using the float position on the loader control valve turns the loader arm cylinders into one-way cylinders. It is just as though you had depressed the 3pt lever beyond where the implement contacts the ground.
BTW, the little rotating plate that Brent mentions as allowing one 3pt arm to move a bit up and down relative to the other arm is a peculiar feature that some tractor manufacturers put on and others do not. Jd uses that rotating plate, others use a "Y" yoke and pins, old JDs used a sleeve within a bushing plus a pin at the top end of the lift arms, and there must be other ways as well.

Joe I purchaseed A JD 4200 HST 60in belly mower, used it one day and called my dealer up and told him I was not pleased with the power, I've a small hill in my yard and when running the belly mower, cutting short grass the tractor rpms would drop off, so he aloud me to trade it back in on A 4400 HST 72in belly mower. I am very pleased with the power, if were in your shoes I would go for the 4300 or 4400, my two MPO.
