I have a JD 4300 and would like to know if my 3pt has a "float" position. How do I "set" it. An experienced farmer took a look but did not know the answer.

3 Point hitches use the equivalent of a single acting cylinder, so they can be
powered to raise, but rely on gravity and the implements weight to lower. Note
also that where the linkage attaches to the 3 point arm there is a pin with a
little rotatable plate. If you rotate the plate then the arms can float a little bit independently of the other arm. If you leave them so there is no
slack then the implement remains locked parallel to the tractor.

I'm not clear on the subject myself. From another discussion, I formed an impression that 3ph's float if the 3pt lever is depressed beyond where the implement contacts the ground.
I remove snow from my drive way with a 3ph blower. The drive goes down a hill before going back up to highway grade. I expected that I would have to raise the hitch at the bottom of the hill to keep the blower skids from digging in. That sure is the way the loader works unless the boom float is used.
However, I operate the blower with the 3ph lever fully depressed. The blower rides up the next hill without the skids digging in. Something seems to be floating, but whether it floats or not, I'm just happy it works the way I want it to. Half the time I have enough to do just to see where I'm going or if I'm blowing snow across on-coming highway traffic without worrying about riding the 3pt lever. ....

I'll go along with both Brent and Tom. To paraphrase both of their explanations, using the float position on the loader control valve turns the loader arm cylinders into one-way cylinders. It is just as though you had depressed the 3pt lever beyond where the implement contacts the ground.
BTW, the little rotating plate that Brent mentions as allowing one 3pt arm to move a bit up and down relative to the other arm is a peculiar feature that some tractor manufacturers put on and others do not. Jd uses that rotating plate, others use a "Y" yoke and pins, old JDs used a sleeve within a bushing plus a pin at the top end of the lift arms, and there must be other ways as well. ....
