Bo, you should be O.K. with the existing wiring, and it should already be protected at the fuse box. The only problem you may have is battery drawdown with all the lights on. The 870's alternator will put out 20 amps at full throttle only. At idle they put out almost nothing. I've had this problem with add-on cabs with extra lights, heaters, etc. Hopefully one more light than factory spec. wont cause you any problems, but I'm sure if you ad any more you will run out of juice. Hi Dana this blower that I have is made from an old silage blower you break the bales and throw into a hopper and the suction from this thing pulls in and than it comes out the hole in the top where they have installed a stove pipe adjustable elbow so you can spread left or right up or down you can also put on a piece of flexable drain pipe that is about 8" in diameter. I am going to do some more work on it. I will probably mount it on a trailer where you can load staw on back and have the blower on the front. I hope it will work I will use it alot. If you have more questions I will try to help. Maybe I can send a picture to you somtime but if you see a silage blower beside a silo it looks like that with a elbow on top instead of a pipe going to the top of the silo

I think the dealer misunderstood something. The manual does recommend 6 weights@60lbs a piece. I also think the quoted price was incorrect. I have 1 set installed 100% of the time. 1/2 our yard is one big hill, in which the weights add stability and actually lessen turf damage due to wheel spin. Kinda hard to believe considering we are only talking about 120lbs. I will also admit using the 410 loader without the rear ballast(also filled with sand), But only for carrying things like trimmed branches and such. This situation is where you really notice the extra 120lbs. Because I've also done this without em. If you look strictly at cost, I doubt you could justify cast weight vs liquid, on the other hand, you lose the ability to adjust the weight of your tractor. Personally, I'm not a fan of liquid in the tires. OMO, forget the idea of NOT using the ballast box.

The Imant deep tiller was very interesting-I was unaware of such a machine for compact tractors.Is there any price information ?
One caveat;ROCKS.In Europe many farms have been picking rocks for centuries or horticulture beds are built up so that rocks are eliminated. Here in Central Wisc. the farmer that rents my bigger fields had a dutch machine by LELY that had 2 bars 12 ft long with 12 inch long prongs every 10 inches that stuck into the ground.The PTO oscilated the 2 bars in opposite directions [perpindicular to the direction of travel]. Rocks basicly destoyed it. It would sweep the rocks in front of it and deposit them where ever you lifted it up for handy picking. The right sized rock[s] however would raise hell.

I do the same thing with a timer on my 755. I never had any problems with any thing.It's sure is nice to check oil & the engine is warm! It starts like summer time.Warm up is a few minites not 30.

If your 440 loader has the quick tach bucket(only requires removing 2 lynch pins) then you can use the same boom mounted attachment that go on the 420,430,460 loaders manufactured now. I know first hand because I built a loader mounted blade for my Dad's 440 loader last year and was pleasantly surprised when it mounted right up to my 420 loader this year. That mounting system, by the way, makes it VERY easy to build your own attachments cause it elimnates the need for precision alignment of the four pivot pins on conventional boom mounts.

Thank you everyone for your advice. I am now the proud new owner of a used JD 7 backhoe. Picked it up on Sunday. Based on all your comments, I would have been a fool not to buy it. Except for some required cleanup, it seems to work great. BTW, the hoe was located in Southern Mid-Michigan, near the Ohio border. Can't wait till Spring.....Thanks again!!!!

It's pretty hard to tell you with out knowing what tractor you're talking about. The lowest range is usually 540 at around 80-90% full throttle.

I have a JD 1050 w/loader for which I had pallet forks made that slip over front edge of the bucket(in front of the lift arms). I modified a pallet with "custom" blocks that I can lower my boom onto and the auger will fold up under(by bending at the ujoint next to the 90 degree gearbox). This keeps all of it out of the dirt. The whole thing goes onto a shelf about 5 feet up that I built along one end in the bldg where I keep equipment. I keep the post hole auger, 2 3 pt sprayers, and a Vicon spreader in the shelf. Sure saves floor space!

OOps. I've gotten a couple of emails asking if I use transmission oil in the engine...My comments must have been a bit on the confusing side. NO! I use engine oil in the engine (Shell Rotella T) and trans/hydro oil (JD HyGard 303) in the transmission. I guess I confused things when I mentioned that some manual transmissions have pressure oiling.
Yep, I believe in engine and transmission oil heaters and in long warmup times. Like the rest of us I simply believe in some oils. That there is not a shred of evidence to backup my belief doesn't bother me in the slightest... :-)

I have a JD4100 with 410 loader. I have the ballast box attached filled with sand. The manual says that I need 6 rear wheel weights in addition to the ballast box, at least that is how I read it. I plan on using the loader to remove snow for the winter and thought that the rear wheel weights would be enough ballast without the ballast box. The ballast box extends beyond the 3 pt. and is not desireable for tight spaces. I asked the dealership about buying wheel weights and they said they are 60 pounds each, don't recommend more than two per axle, and cost $95 each! I think the dealer or the manual made a mistake about how many weights you need on each wheel or maybe they are talking about different size wheel weights. Even if I could afford it, I refuse to spend $400 or $600 for wheel weights. Does anyone know what the cost of having the tires filled with liquid would be? Will the constant weight of liquid filled tires cause lawn damage? With wheel weights I can install and uninstall them as needed but liquid filled tires are there year around.

Thanks for the nice words ct. yank, It is a pleasure serving customers like you. As far as the p.t.o. pump question, it's good to know what the hydraulic output of the tractor your mounting the backhoe, the auxillary pump puts out 6 g.p.m. @ 540 r.p.m. Many of the newer tractor models have hydraulic output exceeding this and do not need the pump kit. New users will find it easy to control their backhoes at low engine speeds. Become familliar with the controls and allow yourself time to build up the coordination skills to run the backhoe smoothly before increasing engine speed. Whatever you do, do not practice near a building (speaking from experience). Keep in mind that whether or not you are using the tractor hydraulics, or the p.t.o. pump kit, as you increase engine speed, you increase the speed of the backhoe. C.T. all the decisions, I think I have it narrowed down finally between two.
First definitly a hydro, wife thinks she'll be able to use it, and it feels much easier to drive.
Color????? Blue or orange.... Each have a couple of unique features, the orange loader can be dumped while lifting or lowering, b2710 has a 4cyl. The blue one has supersteer(3ft turning circle, no scuffing in loose gravel) and blue still has the blue oval employee discount about $1500+1000 rebate for tractor(700) and loader(300) plus great financing till the end of the world(dec. 31 1999) maybe...Just need the 1week test drives by all colors to be sure... Probably wouldn't need one after trying all the flavors, and wouldn't be as hungry.
The house is almost done and the decision will come soon, maybe by y2k.

i have done trenching with a one bottom plow, laid my pvc water line and back filled with a tilt/angle grader blade. works great and a lots cheaper than renting a trencher. i don't think i would do it any other way now.

Bo, check filter prices between dealers. This will tell you if you are being taken advantage of locally. If you want, ask the dealer to explain the difference between oem and aftermarket filters. If they cannot do so in detail, call New Holland and as a recent buyer, they will have a field service representative contact you and they should be able to give you a detailed answer. Also, check the procing on some current products out there that have been releases in the last few years for their filter pricing. In doing this, you may find that all machines filters may cost a lot more that they did a few years ago, but when you compare the recommended change intervals the overall cost of ownership is lower as a result of the improved oil additive packages that have been developed, and new synthetic filter medias. You may want to consider using the oem filters during the warranty period to avoid any arguments should there be a problem. Chart your maintainence costs during the base warranty and decide if they are out of line as a result of filter pricing. If they are, when the base warranty expires and the whole tractor is 100% your responsibility you can do what you want. That will be the true test. I expect that the yearly cost of using the filter designed and spec'd for yur machine will be within reason ovwer the long run. Keep your oil clean, Wade

You are doing it right by raising the auger several times for clearing before reaching final depth. The only thing to be careful about is to not raise fully and allow the auger tip completely out of the hole. If it just barely comes out the cutting edge on the auger can catch on the edge of the hole causing the auger to flail around madly. This can damage the boom or the draft links if you don't get the PTO stopped in time. I had this happen when using a 24 inch diameter auger for tree planting. Of course the same kind of thing can happen when you are drilling a hole in wood or metal with a power drill.
