My congrats too on the 790. Mine is 3yrs old with 250 hours. Machine and dealer are exteamly reliable. A good point was made up front here and that is "how does it feel to operate". the machine needs to "fit" you and each of us just likes different things about the machine and deck on it - where the handles are, pedals etc. Most all are good machines but they need to fit and then get the job done. You made a good choice for you.

By off brand I mean any machine that is not a common name to most of the guys buying/looking. I think as more of the less familiar names become more common thier parts, tech support and dealer promimity will improve. As these improve we'll see more of them. In addition, competitition uaually improves everything. There's nothing wrong with saving $$ if the realiability (from the machine through the dealer) is there.

Go with sand. You won't regret it. Dry it's good, wet it's better and you can easily dump it - you want to at the end of season so your box doesn't rust out. Of course a good older back blade works pretty well too - older means heavier. But go with sand.

I'll give the same advise I've given elsewhere on this question. Don't look at color yet. It seems you want around a 30hpdiesel,4wd. Rent one or two that are different gearing,hp etc. Use them heavy for a day or two. It's like buying a car - drive it. Notice the deck space, gearing,loading,handling,how the dealer treats you, does he have a portable mechanic triler to come to you,how long in business. Talk to people who have bought from the dealer/s. After that decide on your color and then shop price. Price ranges are tight but where you can get extras in on the equipment side. The base price of the primary machine is tight but not the equipment: tires,loader,deck etc. Choose a machine but shop package.

As a 790 owner for two years and a previous multi tractor owner I'm biased for the 790. Much of your same kind of work with a lot of woods work on hills. Get at least 30hpdiesel,4wd with R4s and try to find the older 70 loader (more max pickup). The new loader is good if you're going to be changing to blade often. If you are going to do a lot of back and forth (moving dirt) get a tractor with hydostatic not manual gear - I don't have but prefer manual gear. Best idea - rent one or two and work with it all day or two- it's the best inventment you can make to make the right decision for yourself on gearing, deck,hp etc.

I would say you need about 30hpdiesel to really do the job and in 4wd. You can find these used for that price but as stated yu are looking at about 10 - 20 yrs. I've had an 8N and an HI 464 gas - bigger than my current but only 2wd - no comparison to my current diesel. Look around a lot.Guys fix these up and some are very solid. On a farm that size tractor is not used for real heavy stuff so the wear is not bad - go to some auctions too. I've picked up two others and resold that way - one JD and a Ford. Auctions are also great for implements.

Checked the battery out first and it seems fine - even the water levels were right. I did at first have the corrosion problems spoken of early on but fixed that too 6 months ago.I have a list of questions for dealer - including a proper schematic of the fuse box. As often happens there can be change from publication to on board equipment.My third tractor (IH and Ford) and this kind of thing just seems to go with the machines. I do wonder why the fuse blew ???

I just started checking out compact tractors, and from what I can tell by researching numerous websites and by previous posts here, is that Kioti is a "good buy". I am about to purchase some acerage (just under 10), and was curious to know which model would suit my needs. I will be doing mostly mowing (6 acres or so) and some tilling(1/2 acre), so nothing too strenuous on the machines, but yet I do not want to underpower it. What do you think?

Indirectly. I bought a 1070 and loader for my father as a small payback for a college education. As an after-thought, I decided a canopy would be good for keeping the sun off. As time went by I noticed cracks appearing in the canopy from finding building braces and guy wires. I thought oh well..then I noticed the BIG cracks. It seems he was pushing over a leaning dead tree with the bucket when another dead tree behind it fell on the tractor's canopy. I shuddered when I analyzed the direction of fall.

In '95 I paid $16,670 for a 4x4 870 and 440 loader. At 300 hours, it is still worth every penny to me.

I am on less than an acre of land with no stumps, level land and a bad septic system. I justified my hoe with two jobs; two weekends upgrading the septic system at a justifiable return of about $750 and one very deeply tilled, spur of the moment, sweat-free, no-back-pain ten minute flower bed which rationalized the remaining $5,750. It is not for sale.

I have the 8B on my 870 and it is attached and detached by using the boom and stabilizers. Sounds like an old habit. In my case the dealer apparently didn't read or know how to assemble one. They had the tractor rear brackets reversed and the filter guard screwed up. I had to get the installation manual and reinstall these myself. They also routed the hoses wrong and pinched two lines where the boom pivots at the frame. I didn't know this until months later and the line failed. I was up in the air doing a swing and it went pop. I was STUNNED at how fast it crashed to the ground. The dealer was a state away so I never bothered with them even though it was their responsibility. My only comment is the subframe limits your ground clearance and I am on turf tires to begin with.

The machine is around 1985 vintage. The reed valve looks exactly like a piece of flat shim stock about .035 to .040" thick. There is a light coil spring to hold it flat against the port so I don't believe that the reed itself does much flexing. I can't find or see any place that air is introduce into the block. In thinking about the pulsing (and this is all unsupported conjecture) I would think that as the pistons create a vacuum, a small amount of air is scavenged from various clearances, some from vacuum assisted blowby (I think a lot in my case) and then an increasing negative pressure condition for the rest of the expanding volume. At this time the reed is drawn against the port and no significant air should be leaking past it. This reed valve system looks in perfect working condition. Now as the spark ignites the one cylinder with a compressed charge, the pistons travel towards each other and create a positive pressure within the block which is directed past the reed valve and into the region enclosed by the air filter. This positive pressure wouldn't occur until the existing vacuum is compensated for. I guess at this time the non-combusting cylinder is performing an intake stroke and hence via the reed valve is receiving a positive pressure blast from the crankcase? Granted the pressure blast is released within the filter region where it can escape and equalize with time so maybe there is enough time and filter area that this pulse is of minimal contribution. Oh well, very interesting conversation but kind of hard to dance around what is considered to be low compression....

Well, I read all I could stand. For the money, the King Kutter had a lot of votes so I called around and found that in my area (NC) Tractor Supply carried this brand in 60" for $999. I went to look and is seems that they had a credit card sign up this past weekend with 10% off on your first purchase. I was late but they let me in on it and so I bought it for $950 with tax. I have been saving my pennies so I'll pay it off immediately else it will fast become the most expensive tiller there is.

Tom makes an excellent point about bleeding the lines. I was pleasantly surprised to find out about my 870 that it is self bleeding. Just add fuel and crank. Of course I didn't know that until after I ran it out of fuel and thought darn, this is going to be fun.

The four wheel drive greasing schedule shows your typical tie rod ends, the ends of the power steering cylinder and the axle pivot pin. The spindles are running in an oil bath.

My 870 did the same thing. My theory is this. Threaded fasteners loosen due to relative motion, i.e. parts moving relative to one another. Since all the surfaces involved are flat and perpendicular to the axle, clamping forces alone are what prevents any relative motion. Keep in mind that the wheel center hole is significantly larger than the boss on the hub to which it mates (in terms of the relative motions involved) so it is not providing any assistance in preventing motion. These mating surfaces are also painted and it may be that these high clamping loads are "extruding" the paint or making it flow if you will and hence relaxing the clamping loads to the point that relative motion begins. As was noted earlier, look at the conical mating surface between the nut and the wheel in an automobile. This geometry would absolutely prevent any motion. Also I have noticed that the back of the wheel is always periodically relieved or has contact points which are small enough to effectively penetrate the paint and make positive metal to metal contact. I have not had my tractor wheel loosen since and maybe it is because of the high torque I am applying along with the paint curing and hardening. My experience is limited here so I am not sure.
