I made one. Got a Cylinder, 2 1/2 inch bore, 8 inch stoke, the length i don't remember exactly but around 16 inches. To get the lengths you need just measure your current top link open and closed. Then went to TSC got the weld on pin attachments for the links, did that. Went to the Hydralic shop had them make me the hoses to the right lengths and off I went. Cost about $200. It is very handy. I already had the rear control valve so that was easy. To figure out the size you need Hope this helps.

I made my own mulch kit for mine. This works better than any kit I have seen. For the last few weeks the cottonwood leaves at our place have been really bad. Very thick! I belong to another discussion group for lawncare guys. They almost all mow for a living. They have been running double blades on their machines, 2 on each spindle. I made a bracket to hold the blades in an X and got a longer spindle bolt. I use the regular blade on the bottom and a Gator Blade on the top. I then took off the chute and made a plug out of sheetmetal for the discharge. This setup will chew up leaves better and it doesn't cost near as much as the mulch kit from JD. If you have any questions let me know I would be glad to send you some pictures via the email. I am tellling you this works like a charm!!

I have a JD 4400. I really like the way the mower and loader work for on/off. I helped a friend with his NH 33D, the loader was a snap. The mower on the other hand was not.......I at least found it hard to get on and off. One thing that helps a lot would be to leave the loader on until the mower is on the thing. Use the bucket to push the front end off the ground.....there is a bar for the supersteer (I think) that is in the way of the front wheels of the mower and will not clear them in anyway with out the front of the tractor raised. I can remove my mower in about 3 min. and put it on in about 5. I like a belly mower for the control....Hope all this helps....

there is a chance that you are doing some serious damage to your tractor. There is a PTO brake on our machines......the flywheel in a chipper is very heavy. they make a clutch device that mounts on the shaft it will allow the flywheeel to spin down without tearing out the clutch. I will find out the name of the thing for you and try to post it tomorrow. I know it works because a buddy of mine just got one on his JD4300. I will ask him.

I own a JD 4400 HST. I have noticed a problem with this and wondered if anyone else has. Many times while grading on hills, I have had my head over my right shoulder watching what my implement is doing, and in this position I will inadvertantly knock the tractor into neutal with my left hip. Just to get one thing straight, I am not a huge guy, but when I swivel around to watch my scarifier or box scraper it happens from time to time. Here is the kicker.....when it happens before the implement has gotten into the ground and you are headed downhill you are in a freefall if you don't get the thing into the ground quick. I think this is dangerous, just wondered if anybody else has had this happen. Thanks for your help

I know exactly what they are talking about. I own a 4400 and my friend has a 4300. He has a snowthrower and had this very problem after he got the new axel. The mechanic at the dealer made something to get around the problem. I believe the drive shaft came in contact with the torsion bar when turning, don't qoute me. I know it rendered the snowmachine useless. Hope this helps.

Yes, I have used mine and it does work. I was being extremely careful on a slope that was not by any means hazardous. In the course of traversing a slight slope in a brome field, my downhill wheel went in a hole the sametime the uphill wheel hit a hump. Both of these were caused years ago by a bulldozer turning that I did not know about. Anyway, yes a ROPS works and it does happen fast and no you can't get off. Hope all you never....never have to experience it....keep safe all.

The one I got came from the St Louis area. The price for the whole unit was supposed to be 3700. I am in the process of setting a final price. I am waiting to see what they come back with. You are right about it being a bulky, hard to work with off the tractor unit. I ended up building a platform with castors so I move it around off the tractor. I also don't use any other front attachments so the whole frame had to come off so I could put the mower back on for the summer. Anything else you would like to know just ask.

I Have 3 tractor mounted hitches and 8 implement mounts that are all Freedom Hitches. I love this system. It is faster(back up, tilt the toplink from your seat to match the implement, pick it up, hook up the pto all in less than 3 minutes on any kind of ground) and safer especially if you are alone(no getting off the tractor, moving the implement or the tractor to make the pins match and then kicking the arms to make them go in). I really like this system the best as many have mentioned the uniformity problem with Cat. I implements. All eight implements are made by a different manufacturer and the Freedom Hitch has enough flexibility to be able to accomodate them all. I won't say that you don't need to make some adjustments, when you mount an implement to the hitch piece you might have to take back off and adjust the pin positions to make the implement hook up. But after you make the small adjustments....you will love it. By the way, it is the only quick hitch that works with follow trailing implements with pto like the Aeravator. It has a lot of space for the pto connection to travel. up and down and side to side. Hope this helps.

This is interesting, I have heard from 2 different dealers that John Deere is discontinuing the 4000 line of tractors, changing the sheet metal and some under the hood and calling it the 1000 series. I was wondering if any of the other compact users have heard about this.

There is another method that I use for this. If there is grass under the trees or not try a Power Broom. There are 2 companies making them right now, Stihl and Shindawa. I have 2 Shindawas and really like them for spring cleanup. The big difference is the flaps these have verses brushes. I really count on them in the spring for taking off sand and gravel along streets, parking lots and driveways. Look into these.

Thanks for the help. I just ordered one today for my 955, seems the big fire at the deere storage facility cleared out the ones for the 4000 series. The price is higher than the one you have but it is much larger. I hope it works for what I am getting it for??!!?? I am gonna be disappointed if it doesn't. again thanks for your help.

I have a 1948 8N that we got in 1967 (we though it was old then)and it is indespensible. I also have JD4400, JD955. There are certian jobs that require a 8N. This is fine grading and seeding on hills. Nothing made today that doesn't cost a fortune will hold a sidehill like an 8N. I know that you will grill me on this. I have tried them all. This machine costs me about 150 bucks a year to keep running and I put about 30 to 40 hrs on it. But the hours are on terrain that can't be run with anything else. I hold hills with mine that a Cat D5LGP can't run sideways on. If somebody had smarts they would manufacture another one of these simple, elegant old beauties. I just keeps going. Mine is special, has 3 ranges, not too many of those. I love my old girl and she aint for sale!!!

$You could try a Seat shop if you have one in town...I have used one for mine and had good results at a fraction of the cost of a new one. The seat tray has t obe in good condition but he replacedt the foam and the vinyl for less than 50 bucks. The guy I used did lots of work on boats so I knew he had lots of vinyl experience. hope this helps.$ Operators seat for 955

This is funny...I live in Iowa. Last year I was stopped by a local cop while driving my 4400JD down the street. I had a SMV, flashers and even an extra amber flasher on the ROPS. Anyway, this guy did a u-turn to stop me. He was telling me that it was illegal to transport my tractor this way. My response was that I had done it for 40 years and never been stopped before. As he tells me that he will write me up if he catches me again a friend of mine that is a state trooper goes by and stops. He asks the cop what I did wrong, the two of them go into a huge argument over it and then even went so far as to call a Judge about it. Now as I understood the judge he said I was ok. I thought that the guns were coming out during the argument. The trooper said it had nothing to do with us being friends, it was the pricipal he was after and he knew he was right. LOL
