Power requirements:

Typically (you will hear of people using less power for these applications, but it is not recommended, and most will not be happy with performance, as well as it falls under the heading of "abuse" to the tractor) you need 5hp per foot of brush hog, 3.5 hp per foot of finish mower, 20 hp per foot diameter on a post hole auger, 6hp per foot of rototiller (these are at the PTO). Pushing snow, hp is not a factor, as the bucket is fit to the individual tractor, and will lift when full of snow. The limiting factor here is traction (read that as weight and 2wd v 4wd).

The neat thing about diesel engines is that you can't run them too lean. The more air you put through them, the cooler they run, and the more power you make. With this information, it should be easy to see that anything that makes the engine breathe better, such as larger exhaust and intakes and most "power packs" (like the Banks systems) not only increase power, but torque and mileage as well. The downside is that a given engine design has only so many "horsepower-hours" in it. When you increase the power of the engine, you decrease its life span commensurately. If you take a 300 hp engine that is designed to go 400k miles before a rebuild, and make it put out 600 hp, it will only live about 200k miles.

No, it isn't an option for heavier loads. It is an easier, cheaper, and MUCH stronger axle than the a-arms.

I have an L4400 4wd FEL with a cupholder ;) and am very happy with it. I can't imagine needing more for my 22 acres, hay and straw for my horses, and about 10 acres of cash crop. I pull a 4 bottom plow with no problem, bush hog the pastures with a 6' Squealer (it could probably handle the 7' with no trouble except possibly for the initial pass), clean out the barn, grade the drive, and landscape.

Also biodiesel.org and biowillie.com are a couple of good sites as well. The easiest way to use small-scale biodiesel (i.e. getting it used from restaurants) is to have your mechanic install an automatic (thermostat controlled) heater circuit, which heats the oil to 150 degrees Fahrenheit at which point it will flow like dino diesel. Using this method will allow you to switch back and forth between petro- and bio- fuels with no trouble.

12 to 18" should be plenty. You don't want to go too steep or it will clog with leaves, etc. Any grade shallow enough to only flow slowly is adequate.

I have no experience with the particular models in question, but in general, Kubota make the best compact tractors in the world. I had a NH 45DA, and it was very over-rated on power, both torque and HP, sold that and bought an L4400F. Have been very happy with the Kubota.

Excellent price, the best I could find in mid-Michigan was $17,633.00 for a gear drive with ag tires. Your price may be for a dealer demo model, so check the hourmeter. About a half hour is normal for a new tractor, more than that, and it is used. Maybe lightly (the dealers around like to give test drives), maybe not. Get the history. If it looks good, snap it up quick!

Can anyone tell me if this is a fair price? For the following package: Kubota L4400R (2wd),LA703 loader with 72" bucket, 6' Bush Hog Squealer SQ720, and Machio AL 160 64" rotary tiller; I was quoted $21,025 out the door. Is this a good deal?
