Of course a 70 loader is included. I don't know what I was thinking. I guess I am so upset about selling my toy, I lost my mind. :(.

Halsey, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Was very busy at work.

The tooth bar works great, it is made by a company in PA, called ATI, and I will try and get the number for you. It is a perfect fit on the 70 bucket. Just slide the bar over the cutting edge, and drill two pre-holes, followed by the larger finished holes (very easy to drill through the bucket sides with new drill bits or good sharp ones) and two bolts. Then I had to fasten the removable teeth( cost more for this type of bar, but worth it to me). Took about 15-20mins. and away I went to make a mess of my yard. LOTS OF FUN!

Cost was 400.00 all together. I have seen them for less, but would question the quality of the ones that cost 250.00! Order local, not on the net, too hard to return the product or get help if you need it. Try and find the bar I have, again it's made by ATI, in PA. Ask a local JD dealer.

As far as the quality of the bucket with the tooth bar, well it cuts real nice now. Don't expect a tooth bar to add HP to the tractor, keep in mind that this is a compact, you are not going to cut 6" of packed rock and dirt at a time. Little 2" cuts are all you can expect. But you get nice full loads each time, and with a little practice, the quality and quantity of dirt removal will improve to a level not possible with a standard cutting edge. I knew I had made a moster out of my machine when I drove forward 4-6' and had a full bucket and the machine had that front heavy feeling when I raised the bucket up. Without the tooth bar, all I ever got was the effect of compacting the ground more and some dust in the bucket with some pebbles, well maybe a little better, but you get the picture.

I also found the teeth great to take the place of a box scraper for leveling small areas. Just tip the bucket all the way down, and adjust deep of cut as needed while backing up, works great for busting up rocky soil too.

So, go get yourself a tooth bar, and have some fun with it. This little bar has basiclly eleminate most chores I was sure I would need a backhoe for. What a great tool my 790 has become!

Danny, there are many, many, and I mean many, posts on this subject already. Try searching some threads.

I have the 790 4wd with the 70 loader and use a Sub soiler(which work amazingly well) a 3' rake and I am getting a post hole digger and box scraper next week. I think just about anything will work well with the 790. Just keep it Cat 1. and you will do fine with any toy your heart desires (and your wallet too)

Peter, on the 430 loader issue, the 430 is for the 4300,4400. They are heavier machines then the 790. I am sure this is why JD rates the 430 for a better lift. cap. But, 755lbs isn't bad, I believe this is at full lift height. I know I have carried large stones that must have been more then 1000lbs, with the bucket a few inches off the ground with no trouble at all from my 790.

If your looking to do heavy loader work on a compact, I would look at Kubota. They seem to have huge lift cap. on there machines compared to JD. The specs of a Kubota B21 are amazing compared to JD.

Anyway, I like my JD790, but would buy blue or orange next time around. JD790 is very "clunky" and not at all user friendly as far as controls. The more I use it in heavy work, the more I wish I waited to look at Blue and Orange tractors. Oh well.

sounds like the wedges were never adjusted to me. I noticed that my right wedge has to be adjusted, and I could imagine the bracket coming out of place if the right force was applied. User neglect would be the reason for the bucket falling off, unless otherwise known by anyother user.

Amen to that Mike! This brings up a point that I forgot to mention. It's the point that drives my view home, reguardless of markups, who's willing to pay the most ect....

Isn't it better to make something off a sale, then make nothing by losing a potental client with an insulting quote? Or what the heck, they figure for every five they lose, the one sucker who will pay 1,500 or 2,500 more makes up for giving a good deal to the "informed" guy.

Selling a Backhoe is a phone call from the dealer, for a nice little profit.
Seems there should be some room in the price to stay competitive, requardless of the price break Woods gives them.

I am not saying that dealers should give tractors and implements away, but some sort of "competitive"price structure would be great. I know that on the John Deere tractors, almost four different dealers were within 1,000.00, so there was some sanity to it. And that was on a 14,000.00 machine. Why such a problem with a 5,000.00 implement. Well I don't think I can get anyone to side with me anyway, but it was nice to complain a little..........

Got my 790 w 70 loader late last year, paid 14,700.00
The 790 has very little markup on it, so no dealer is going to do better then 11,000 on the machine, as a matter a fact my dealer told me the price JD quotes on there advertised $ did not include the SCV or the mid PTO, and was for the Bar tires. So when he added the SCV, MID PTO, the Turf Tires, and ballast box, came to $12,000.00 (4wd of course). the 70 loader was 2,700.00 installed.

I agree with the 770 over the 790, if you can in fact get a 770 with the loader for 10k, that is a great deal. I would have taken a 770 if there was a used one at the time I got my 790. Could have got my Backhoe with the extra cash, and 300hours is nothing on a machine if it wasn't abused.

Also, don't forget, no warrenty if you go used. (not that you need one with a JD....LOL)

That is a great price. I had gotten prices from 4,700-6500 for the exact same 7500 hoe for the 790. I gave up on Woods becuase I felt someone was looing to stick me, or something wasn't right with the huge differences in quotes. So, I might consider Kelley instead. We will have to see how much Kelley dealers want to stick it to their clients. I have heard that the kelley 750 was a lot cheaper then the woods, but no sub-frame, which I don't really want a hoe without a subframe. I want to use the hoe for trenching ect.. and I am not interested in playing games setting up special each time I move a few feet forward.

Anyone know how much a Kelley 750 goes for, and does anyone other then the dealer on CTB have on??????????

Michael said it all, why are some people so worried about little things like cup holders on tractors, when I almost get run off the road each week by a big mouth having at it with his boss or wife on his care phone, and he desides to forget to use turn signals and cuts me off. Sorry way off track now....

I think we beat this subject to death. Hmmm A microwave and a phone on my John Deere......LOL.....Porta Potty be neat....

Have a new 790 4wd, with turf tires. Ran a short distance of 6" drainage hose.
Used a Sub-Soiler, took about three passes (for proper depth and width). Still had to "clean" up the trench with the bucket a little. I found that using the Sub-soiler didn't even phase the machine. Was like just driving forward while dragging the brakes a little. No one mentions this, but I will, DO NOT DRIVE FAST WITH THE SUB-SOILER ALL THE WAY DOWN. You will either rip the machine apart or do a wheelie if you should catch a rock. I almost found out the hard way. First gear or second in low range 4wd engaged works great, and gives plenty of time to raise the hitch if you should grap a rock.

I found that (in playing around just for fun) if you use the sub-soiler to start the trench, and then go back with the bucket (assuming you have a loader), you can dig virtually any width or depth (with-in reason) wire or pipe trench. 18"-24" with not much effort should be easy.

I wanted a China Diesel in the worst way. I have about 30 sheets of information on the machine. You should do your homework on "Grey Market" tractors. Not much warrenty, if any at all, and part supply, good luck.
You can get a 254y for around 6,500.00 or so (might be 6900) and have a reconditioned used tractor, or spend a little more and get a real name Kubota or John Deere. Think about it, if a tractor like the china Diesel was that great, why would so many people buy Kubota's and JD ect....

I spent two years thinking about buying the 254y, I know am a proud owner of a JD 790, and never look back on my desicion as being a mistake.

The guy on the phone at China Diesel sounded to be more of a Salemen, then a tractor buff. And out of all of NJ/PA/NY only a few people were given to me as references. When I wanted to know about JD satisifaction, all I had to do was drive around the area and see a John Deere in just about every Farm. Never once in my life have I seen or heard anything about China Diesel until I saw them on the WEB.

You can get a GST 4100 or a 790 John Deere for around 10,900.00 or so. Brand new, lots of support and you know that they will be around for a while. good luck in a couple years when you have a bad machined part on your China Diesel.

A couple points as an example:
Why do they ship the machine with a complete engine rebuild kit?
What happens if the one and only company importer to the US goes under?
And, oh yes, can you say you know anyone in your state who has one of these machines?

I am sure these machines are strong and solid, but like I said, what support do you have if something should go wrong. I like to see what happens when you want to ship your tractor back to CA. becuase you are sick of the way is runs, or something like the power steering pump goes, and the guy says "We'll ship you a new one"

If you really can't swing a new machine, look into used JD 755,855,955, Around the same price you can even get a Kubota 7300 (loader brings price up to 9,000).

I looked at a L2500 and a b2100, went with the JD790.
The problems with JD are to do with the early introduction of the 4100 and tire scuffing and turf tearing. I also know of some other minor bugs they had to work out. The newer models(current model you would be looking at), have these problems taken care of, but the would have to be followed up by the owners of 4100's. The 790 has no problems that I can think of. In six months my only complaint has been a missing strap to keep the hydro hoses from rubbing the front tire, took all of three seconds to fix this.

Funny thing for me to say, but if I had the money to spend at the time, I would have gone with the largest Kubota I could get. I always wanted a Kubota, I wanted to get away from JD. However, opposite of what others say, when I should up at the Kubota dealer with money ready to buy, they had nothing to compare to the JD790 . No such animal in Kubota to compare to a 30hp machine with a Loader for 14k. The closest thing is a B2100 with a loaders, and I was looking at a little whimppy 17HP PTO, total turn off. A L2500 was nice, and you are looking at the L3010, even nicer but $$$!

I also think that you better check some issues of part aval. I heard something about the power steering being a problem spot with Kutbota, but from what I see on this board, haven't seen this confirmed.

I love my 790, not because it is green, but becuase it is one heavy, well built work horse, and the B2100 was a big machine for that little diesel.

Doug, Just type "JD 790" in that little box that says search on the upper right hand corner of the screen. A few good things come up. Also, go to a dealer and drive a 4100 and then drive a 790. Try the HST and GST. Play with the loader,look at the PTO rigging ect.... compare the specs out of the Product book, other than that, it is a whole lot of fun to shop for a machine.

As you can see just from the few current posts the 790 is pretty well regarded, and the 4100 is also a popular model as well. I just think that either is okay, but the 790, hands down, gives you more machine for the money. If all you want to do is mow, then maybe you should lean towards the 4100, it's lighter and the HST would be better for an average user to deal with. I personally "like" gst over hst, so even if I could have bought HST with the 790 , I would not have been willing to pay more for it. For me , the more levers, and gadgets the better, I just love tractors though..... Don't care about automatic pushy pedals. LOL....

I got my 790 in Oct. 99'. Love the machine, and sounds like you are getting a great deal. I paid 14,700 for 790 4wd mid/rear pto/70 loader/ ballast box/ turf tires.

The pto's have seperate levers and can be engaged one at time or both, as well as a 2-stage clutch, so yes to your question. But, I guess you know all this by now. Love the machine, and snow removal was a blast this winter.....

The 790 does not have a hydro option. It is a economic work horse. Period.
Look at the 3 point hitch on the 790 and note the quality too, I was much more impressed with it's hitch for some reason, then the 4100.

Oh, the 790 uses the old '7' series attachments, which are to be phased out. As far as the 90 series, I thought I heard rumor of a new 990 or something of that nature coming out soon. But, even if they do phase it out, don't forget that you can get parts for JD's from the early day's of production. So, I am sure the 790 parts will be around for a good long time. I think other than a clutch, not sure what else you would ever break on the 790 without a loader anyway.

I'm telling you, go look at this machine next to the 4100, nothing else will need to be said. I also don't have many of those problems I read about some of the 4100's having.

Guess you can tell how much I like my 790. Sorry to keep pushing it. I am just a true Green man and proud of the machine. And with my past experience in hating John Deere, this is an impressive accomplishment.

Thought you guys who are affriad of tipping (like me) and want to be a safe operator, spend a little money and a few weeks of study. Purchase A book called Operating Techniques for the Tractor Loader-Backhoe. I will try and find the web site for you. It is about large machines, but the princibles are the same for our little compacts. I operated a Cat. Dozer 933 and a D5H for a very short time, but the idea behind the safety of the large machines applies to the little guys too. The book should be a must for any owner of a compact before he(or she) operates one with a loader or on a hill!

PS I don't even plow snow without that seatbelt. If nothing else, it reminds me of how dangerous a 1-ton machine can be, and keeps me on my toes. Pitched across a slope with a load in the bucket and no counter weight, I can see my 790 tipping without a second thought..... Keep safe and take your time. Not unlike flying a plane, when you get too confident, you are looking death in the face! If you are too sure of yourself, stop and take a break... PLAN YOUR NEXT MOVE AND ANTICAPATE PROBLEMS BEFORE THEY HAPPEN!

Just to add some comments on what I see;

-455 as a plus can lift 670lbs at 24" (I think) on a cat "0" hitch, which is nice. However I was hard pressed to find any attachments that worked with the cat "0" hitch. You can not just switch cat "1" pins to cat "0" and expect them to fit on your 455. Second cat "0" attachments seem to be harder to find and are more expencive when you do finally find them.
-455 can roll over too if the user is that careless! And no seatbelt or any type of R.O.P. on a 455. A compact has a seatbelt and a roll bar, and if used correctly, the compact is a safe machine. A compact isn't a lawn toy, and if you are not "qualitfied" you should not be operating it to began with. I would not even began to think of letting my kids or my wife use the compact unless they were cutting grass on a flat level surface, and were wearing the seat belt!
I have read stories about roll-overs with garden machine too. So that should not play a factor in the use of the machine.
-If you plan on cutting grass and tiling a small plot of ground go for a 455 if you can justify $12,000.00 for it.
-The resale of a 455 is not comparable to that of a compact. And, if you ever want to expand into a loader, the loader for a 400 series will run you around 4k by the time you buy tires and wts.

If you got to have a 455 , please buy a used one, and don't waste money on a new one. I paid 12,000 for mine and got 8,000 for it just six month later. Some trade-in value!!!!

790 owner. I saw the 4100 sitting next (and down) from me when sitting on the 790. The 790 has a larger engine, larger tires, althought the 4200 comes a little closer to the 790. However, you pay a lot more for a 4200 and a loader, than I paid for my 790. If you don't mind GST, then I don't know why you would buy the 4000 series. My 790 is a dream to run, and does all you want and more. Good luck, and I would encourage JD over Kubota if you are comparing a 790 to anything they have in the 14k price range. The L2500 is nice, but I don't like slide shifter. Anyway.....

Hmmm, I find that the "preheater" run for 20 seconds, and then full throttlle turn the key to start, and it starts right up just fine (although I think it has only been in the mid to high teens so far this year, yesterday being one the colder days of the year. Anyway, my 790 starts just fine in the cold, I find of thought the idea of the preheater was to eliminate the need of a block heater. I also start my machine every other day just to make sure engine oil and hydro fluids have a chance to loosen up and keep all those little parts lubed nicely.

I paid 14,900.00 for 790 4wd/mid and rear pto/70 loader ballast box. Love the machine, have no regrets so far.
