The seat is not the only issue. The 23HP gas "Kubota" Kohler keeps running and/or backfires when turning it off. I changed the oil at about 10 hours and it had some unusually large pieces of (aluminum?) metal in it. The dealer first blamed it on bad gas, then said I was shutting it off wrong, then blamed the new emissions. Other than that it runs fine, but for how long? It sounds and looks like it's eating up the pistons.

OK, now that I realize I never received the service manual I'm going back to the dealer again. They changed ownership recently to a company that bought out all of the John Deere dealers in the area except one. They said they lost my records. The dash fogging up and the intermittent not moving problem should be easy for them to fix... I hope.

I would say that you're leaning towards a Kubota because you posted your question here in the Kubota forum. I had a 1982 JD 1050 and all I ever did besides routine maintenance is replace the battery and clutch. I bought a new 4310 in 2003 loaded with all of the options. I've had a couple of minor problems which still aren't repaired. Because of the poor dealer support I just bought a Kubota mower. It was like jumping out of the frying pan into the fire.

It sounds like Kubota should do a recall or TSB to find out if this is a fluke or not. How old/new is your tractor? Maybe if they looked at others with a serial number before and after yours they could determine if this is an isolated difference.

Hmmm, yeah, JD makes one for the 790, but not the 1070. With the blower on the back and the loader on the front I can do a nice neat job on my concrete driveway. I hace an old model 666 JD blower. I need to use the brakes to help steer my 4310 unless I also have a heavy load in the bucket.

I would say it depends on what you're cutting. I had a 1050 and recently downsized to a 4310. Both have had little problem using my 5' brush cutter (an old HD Ford) or with my 6' Bush Hog brand finishing mower. Once in a while if I'm using the finishing mower in high grass like a field I'll have to slow down a bit with the 4310 which should be comparable to your 870 PTO power.
