Without looking up the specs and relying on just the picture I'd say that you might have to feed at least three parking meters if you park along the street. Parking in the mall lot? Piece of cake. Just take your motorscooter with you to get back to the mall entrance.

Out on the highway I'd wager that few people are going to try to slice and dice with you. And if you rig up a heavy, spring-loaded, sidemounted, proximity sensor trip, retractable kicker block then when anybody gets too close to you the kicker block will trip and boot them sideways about three lanes. Gets their attention every time!

I'm looking for a finish mower to hang on the 3ph of my NH TC33D. Saw a new 60" rear disch. Howse mower today that the seller wanted $950 for. Two questions: Is the Howse finish mower reliable (I've used both 4' and 5' Howse rotary mowers with excellent results)? And is this a fair price to pay for this size mower.<br>

On a different subject, I have to do some reverse mowing to get back into some close clearance areas of my property. Can I do this with a rear discharge mower? I've heard and read that the rear disch. distributes the cuttings more evenly, but if reverse mowing is a no-no then I can think about a side disch unit.<br>

I've never owned or used a finish mower but now I'm leaning in that direction in an effort to get better cutting results in one of our pastures and also (maybe) to replace a Scotts lawn tractor. My question is what brand of mower represents good value for the money?

Here's what we've got. This 5 acre pasture is mostly flat with a couple of ridges and low areas. There're a couple of low rock outcrops, almost flush to the ground, that I haven't gotten rid of yet (but plan to work on this winter). There are quite a few trees (She Who Must Be Obeyed won't agree to cutting and thinning them out) to cut around so manuverability is important. The 3-acre "lawn" around the house is flat with trees. No rocks. We'll be mowing 3-6" high. The tractor is a TC33D w/turf tires. I'm thinking a 3ph mower might be better than a tag-along for backing into corners.

Area dealers (including an auction yard) sell Rhino, Leinbach, Woods, Sitrex (Italian brand), King Kutter, and Howse mowers. I'm not against going out-of-area to pick up a good deal but will need reliable access to parts as this sandy soil is death on blades.

So, given all that, what's my best option for a good, reliable mower at a reasonable price?

I can appreciate your problem with the overhanging limbs. I had a used Yanmar 195 that the previous owner had equipped with a ROPS and sunshade. Even though I tried to limb back all the trees where I expected to be cutting close, I overlooked one limb that dangled just 2" too low. Scratch one perfectly good sunshade! Our TC33D doesn't go near any of our trees without first checking clearances all around.

BushHog, Howse, and Leinbach are three that I've tried out. Bought the Howse new at an equipment auction. Saved $150 on a 60" mower. Don't use a finish mower on the pasture because the ground is too rough.

Man, if you get an answer to this let us all know. I've greased the h**l out of the foot treadle shaft to no avail. I thought there must be some other place to lube but I could never find one. The Boomers leave some things to be desired for ease of maintenance.

Another problem I have with my 33D is the 3pt raise/lower lever is really sticky. And there's really no easy way to get close enough to the bottom of the lever where it rotates on its stub shaft to lube it good (I try to lube it with a pressurized can of grease with a flex-tube extension). Why NH didn't put a zerk on that bushing is beyond me. A mechanic I know says he might be able to get in there to drill and tap it without having to disassemble half the dash and right fender assembly.

I think draft control is designed to function with ground engaging equipment such as a plow. Increased pressure on the upper link will cause the lift arms to raise to reduce the forces on the upperlink. I like to think of it as a "constant horsepower" input control. Position control just maintains the elevation or depth of whatever tool you've got hooked up. If any of this is incorrect, maybe someone else will chime in here to clarify and correct me.

Matt -- Thanks for the fast feedback. I took a quick look at the thread you mentioned but didn't notice any comments about whether I could position the chain off of the tractor centerline to trench directly inline with my tires. For reasons known only to "She Who Must BE Obeyed", the trench has to hug the fence.

I'll look at it again when I have more time to explore the references.

Here's what I do with a 60" Howse rotary mower on a NH TC33D. First off, the fields we mow (our property) are cleared, destumped, and mostly free of exposed rocks. We support the mower deck on the lower lift arms and the rear tire. We run with the top, adjustable lift link disconnected to get the maximum float. Although the fields are clear they have some sharply rolling terrain that would otherwise bend something while mowing if the mower isn't raised.

In order to get the lowest cut possible without carving up the ground with the deck runners I've welded two struts to the front of the deck and use wheel assemblies from a finish mower to limit the down travel on the deck when the tractor lift arms sag while crossing the rutted areas. It all works well for us.

A TC33D w/7308 FEL, including tax, came home with me for $18,962. There was no dickering on this as they were flying off the dealer's lot at the time. I haven't regretted buying it for an instant.

I've got a Yanmar 195 I want to sell but I have no idea what would be a reasonable price to ask for it in this area (northcentral Florida). Has anyone got any ideas what prices these are selling for these days?<br>

I paid $3800 for this tractor with a 4' rotary mower and a flat blade back in 1995. A local auction house just knocked down a pair of YM2000's at $2900 each. Is the 2000 comparable to the 195?<br>

I've been in a couple of situations with my 33D recently where common sense has gone walkabout. We've been felling some trees and moving the brush and cut-to-length trunks to other locations on the property. The ground surface in the area where we've been working is pretty rough what with holes where we've also been ripping rock out. I picked up (barely) one 16' long log on the palette forks and started to move forward in 4wd when a front wheel fell into one of the holes. It's a really bad feeling knowing that you're only a few inches or pounds away from laying the tractor on its side. When I had my small Yanmar 195 in service I tried to do 33hp work with it. Now I've got the 33hp and I'm asking it to do 45hp stuff. Do you ever get to the point of having enough horses?

Check your gearbox to make sure its filled with the right amount and type of gear oil. I've heard that some new units are filled with a lighter "breakin" oil [can't verify that just now]. An older, 48" Howse we own makes a lot of noise that lessens with a heavier weight of lube in the g'box [probably got a lot of wear; we bought it used with a tractor].

My new TC33D had some light fogging behind the faceplate that disappeared after some time in the sun. I thought about the silica gel idea but don't know if this stuff could corrode the metal it comes in contact with when it's damp. The idea of drilling weep holes worked on the headlamp assys. of a Ford Taurus we had that somehow had developed cracks in the back of the assy. We had free water in them that drained out OK. But there was always moisture inside that finally burned out the bulbs.
