The JD 4700 book say do not use starter fluid. But the 4700 has no glow plugs (right?) and so isn't the risk of premature ignition a moot point? Used sparingly as a diagnostic tool is starter fluid a real problem or just a John Deere's means of covering its derrier?

My shop manual hasn't arrived yet. Can I just unscrew the solenoid cover or is there more to it than that? Also, can I shoot diesel fuel into the intake (as you would starter fluid) to confirm that I have enough cranking speed and compression? Or will that bugger it up somehow.
