I'm not sure about the new 'Botas, but I've had two JD 770's(older versions of 790) and they are the best cold starting diesels I've ever seen. They have a intake air warmer but never had to use it even down to -10F. The other thing I like about the JD is that its gear drive. Simple reliable, built to last. The 770/790 is the modern equivalent to the old Ford 8N, they will be around for years after the newer all electronic bells and whistle tractors have been melted for scrap.

I agree w/ kwschumm, As long as it has 4WD it sounds like a screaming deal!!! If it has only 2WD look elsewhere. 2WD is useless w/ a FEL.

If you were told that the tractor was a 2001 and it IS a JD 770, either they dont know what they are talking about or they are lying to you. The last year that JD made the 770 was 1998, after that it became the 790. As for the cost, it seems a little on the high side, for 1600+ hrs. The hours dont bother me but I just upgraded my '89 770 for a mint '96 770 w/ 375 hrs for $7k, after I got a 419 loader and hyd valve, I was still under 10k for a showroom condition tractor.

You can check the year of the tractor by serial number on http://www.machinerylink.com, I don't think that the price guide is that accurate because it doesnt say what is included in their average retail prices loaders? mowers? nothing?

Need 3-pt hitch for JD 790

I just installed a step on my 770 to make it easier to get onto. I dont know why JD didnt put them on in the first place. I ordered the step (which comes on the 790's) from my local dealer (JD # AM880256 ) for $41.59. Installation is easy, drill two holes, four M8 bolts and nuts. This makes getting on and off so much easier. Although I think the reason that the previous owner sold it was in part because of the high step up to get on. Being somewhat young or close to it, I can see that getting on the tractor could be a pain as the years roll on.
