I just went shopping for a John Deere and discovered the same thing...you pay a premium in CA for new or used compact tractors. I thought about buying out of state, however I was able do pick up a JD 870 mfwd with a FEL that needed some engine work for a resonable price and only 4 hours away.....so away i went.. Around here the vineyards and the "gentlemen farmers" with 2 acres and a fat retirement check keep the prices high.
Reguarding the warrentee question...call Kubota corperate offices....I bet they will tell you a different story and will want to know the name of the dealership with the BAD attitude.

IT RUNS AGAIN. I spent a rainy weekend in my doorless shop and put the 870 back together. While cleaning the bore of the cyl that was getting the new piston, I found some aluminum from the old piston stuck to the cyl wall. I guess that means the piston siezed when it was overheated, and when it cooled it broke loose. There was no damage to the cyl. I ran my "stiffback" hone down the bore and did find a little wear in the cyl where the top ring reaches its max height. Very Little wear, I do not own a cyl mike but I would guess the wear to be less than .002 of an inch which is well within spec. (yes I did buy the engine shop manual before working on this engine)
So nice to have a tractor that starts without a cloud of white smoke..

Thanks for the input. I will be going to look at the tractor on Saterday (3 hour drive), and will take my cooling system tester (exhaust gas test) and hope it works on diesels.
The local dealer is pricing parts for me as I type so I can have a rough idea of how broke I'm gonna be. One dealer says a factory rebuilt is available (worst case senario), other dealer says nope...no rebuilds available ?????
Will post an update when I know more and if I take the plunge and buy the beast....Thanks again
