I have 2 acres in southern Indiana, it used to be a soybean field and is a bit lumpy in spots. Right now it is waist-high grass and weeds. I also have a 10 foot tall dirt pile leftover from building a pole barn I need to deal with, but I need some of that to fill in the ruts and lumps in the property plus fill in where they dug out the area for the barn too big. In the future I would like to put in a large garden plot, do some landscaping. The lot is flat and clear with no trees, stumps or large rocks.<br>

I was thinking of a JD 790 for its simplicity, it seems to be an old-school type tractor and being a total newbie to the tractor world that's fine with me. I was thinking of going with a FEL, 5-foot bush hog, grader box and a smaller cultivator, maybe a landscape rake too, eventually going to a finish mower after I get the property graded and smoothed out. <br>

Any thoughts would be appreciated...even advice on older John Deere models. I have looked at older Ford 8N/NAA/2000's, Massey 135's, crappy Jinma's, and some really beat-up Cub Cadet lo-boys for sale in the local area. <br>

I am a big guy, 300 pounds, and some of the sub-compact machines I've looked at just seem really uncomfortable, any big people out there like me your input is welcome on the comfort/ease of use of various machines even non-JD's.<br>

Lastly, anyone have any comments on JD dealers in the Louisville,Kentucky area (specifically Ray's Lawn & Garden in Sellersburg,IN which is the closest JD dealer to my property).<br>

Some time ago I was looking at a 10-year old International 1120 on a dealer lot, realized it was made by Mitsubishi. Then looking at a used but relatively new Cub Cadet 8000 series on the lot, hmmmm...same tractor but different tire size bigger engine ?? Design sure looked similar (giveaway detail was the shape and location of the fuel tank behind the seat). <br>

While out tractor shopping, I see most dealers sell implements under their own brand.... Ford-New Holland/Case-IH-Farmall, Massey-Ferguson, John Deere, Kubota, etc.<br>

Any comments on the quality of implements is appreciated (around here in southern Indiana all I can seem to find is Land Pride and King Cutter). I am looking for about a 30-35hp CUT and a rotary cutter, finish mower, rear blade, front blade, FEL, cultivator, and grader box.<br>

How do these compare in price to Case/Ford-NH/Kubota/Zetor (the other brands that have dealers nearby) ?? I ask this as I am just now getting ready to go out and look for a tractor...I'm starting with MF just because they have been the most responsive to my inquiries for information thus far.<br>

I was at the National Farm Machinery Show in Louisville,KY back in February, looked at some new FarmTrac T-series tractors (T-35?). These look a lot like a 1970's/1980's model Ford New Holland 2000/3000 series right down to the dark blue paint. Are these based on a Ford design or perhaps they are old Ford designs built under license ?? Where are the sourced from?? Who makes/designs the engines and transmissions for these tractors ??? Any opinions on if these would be a good alternative to say a new Case DX33 or NH TC-33 type compact tractor?<br>

Yeah, but I figure just like car buying it really comes down to the dealer's customer service. To me there is not a lot of real difference in the 30-hp compacts I've looked at from JD, Big K, Case-IH-Farmall, MF, Zetor, Century, Branson, Ford and Kioti. (Exception is the Chinese Jinma tractors, they are put together like JUNK).
So the red tractor DX33 from a good dealer beats out the blue TC33 from the folks with bad service. Simple as that.
The Case dealer even called to apologize that the company is behind on sending out product literature, said they'll have new DX series on the lot in a week or two come on down. That merits another look at their stuff.
Their "sister" dealership that sells Cub Cadet and Kubota was so-so, they weren't rude but weren't trying to reach out to a city boy who has never owned a riding mower much less a CUT like the Case folks....we'll see how this plays out. I understand this is the time of year when the new tractors are in and the dealers want to sell ??

I was at the National Farm Machinery Show in Louisville, Kentucky last weekend...looked at Massey-Ferguson 1433 (33 horsepower, 4WD, had a FEL on it and a bush hog).
Just below the driver's seat was a silver decal that very clearly said "Manufactured for Massey Ferguson by Iseki something or other Tractor, some city or other Japan. MADE IN JAPAN."

You might want to look at the M-F compacts....they didn't look too bad, but then I am a true novice in the area of tractors (I'm a city boy ;).

I am looking for some opinions on the Cub Cadet model 3235 (25hp Kohler, 60" deck, shaft drive).I have just over 2 acres of flat but rough ground (former farm field, hasn't been graded for future building yet) to mow...would also like to use cultivator and other ground-engaging implements for gardening.I am willing to pay the money for a quality product; already looked at JD G-100 series at Home Depot and that is my distant second choice, also considering Toro LXi series or perhaps used Cub or JD.Also, if anyone has some thoughts on the Cub dealers in the Louisville, KY metro area feel free to post or email me privately.Local dealers selling these tractors around $5895 without the deck (another $1300 for 60").Any and all comments appreciated.Mike in Marysville, Indiana 47141

Here is my dilemma: I have 2 acres of flat but unimproved land that I plan to build a fence, pole barn, and 1500 square foot modular house on this year. I have considered a Cub Cadet 3200 series garden tractor or the new JD G100 garden tractors for mowing, using a tiller, and a front blade plus pulling a dump cart. However, the thought crossed my mind that I could probably get a good used Kubota BX with a FEL, backhoe and a belly mower plus a box grader to add some flexibility and also maybe do my own land grading, spreading gravel/dirt, digging post holes, etc. A friend who has extensive experience as a tractor mechanic recently recommended taking a look at older Ford 2000 / 3000 series small Ag tractors, or the older Massey Ferguson 135/150 series or even the new Mahindra 3505 series tractors. My price range is around $8000 max, which I know won't even touch a used Kubota BX....so my dilemma is do I just say screw it, buy the "garden" tractor and contract out all the other stuff or go with a bigger machine that can do multiple jobs ??

And one last stupid question, can a Kubota BX series use a PTO-driven post-hole digger ??? ( Okay, I admit I'm a city boy who is about to move to the country ;)

Finally, any advice on the tractor dealers in the southern indiana area (I'm specifically interested in experiences with Jacobi Sales, Ray's Lawn & Garden, and Deb-Rae Inc.)

I am looking for information on modular home dealers in southern indiana, in the Louisville, KY metro area. I would like a 1500-2000 square foot 3BR/2BA home on a slab or partial basement. I have found a Fleetwood Homes design I like (Meadowbrook model # 4563T), but I have seen some very bad info on this brand on other internet forums.
Patriot has been recommended to me as a "good" brand...any thoughts on dealers and brands of modular homes is appreciated. Feel free to respond here or email me privately. I am *not* interested in "double-wide" or "single-wide" homes, only "modulars" !!

Last item: anyone know if you can have a residential fire sprinkler system built into a modular at the factory ????
(It's a firefighter thing I guess ;).

Over the weekend, a different opportunity presented itself... 1954 Ford NAA tractor with a rebuilt transmission, new paint, new tires all around, and recent tune up and water pump...comes with 60" bush hog, rear box grader, never used front blade, and a rusty but probably workable mid-mount plow. Seller is only the second owner, has all manuals and receipts for repair work he's done plus back to about 1980. Price: $3850 or best offer. It runs well and he uses it to mow grass on 3 1/2 acres. This might be overkill for 2 acres, but it appears to be in decent shape and besides, it's a "cool old tractor" as my little nephew said. ;)

Ideas, anyone ? Is this a fair price for a NAA ?? (I know this isn't the Ford forum but what the heck).

I was out taking an aimless Sunday afternoon drive, and there it was. ;)

I found my land after about a year long search...my criteria was flat, within 30 minute drive of Louisville, KY and had utilities available. Secondary considerations were location outside of the raging annexation/zoning battles going on in the area (i.e., not within some city's incorporation zone) and also not more than 3 acres so I won't have to spend every moment of my free time cutting grass. I got 2 acres for $23,950 which is the going rate in this area at this time. I got what I wanted, plus a spectacular view of farm ponds and woods that is only a mile off a major highway. It is quiet, picturesque and manageable. Keep looking and you never know what those "Sunday drives in the country" will turn up!!!
