I removed the shaft from the lower wheel housing. I found all the pieces intact (External C clip, spring, interior C clip, etc.) but the external C clip that holds the shaft tight against the spring clip and face of the sleeve bearing had either slipped from its place in a groove on the shaft (doubtful), or (more likely) had never been seated fully in the groove when the C clip was installed, and had finnaly just worked its way down the shaft, allowing the shaft to ride 1/4 inch toward the operator, and pulling with it the pulley into the blade guard at the rear of the saw housing.

Since I never had reason to fiddle with the shaft in the twenty plus years that I have had the saw, I guess that my father-in-law, who owned the saw before me, was the guilty party for not installing the C clip fully. Easy to do--the groove on the shaft is quite thin, and the C clip is difficult to slide along the shaft--very tight fit.

Anyway, problem solved, and thanks to all who offered good advice.

Are "Gator" blades available from the dealer, or are they an after market specialty item? If speciality, can you recommend a seller?

I have a BX2350 with FEL. I want to use the FEL to lift heavy objects (putting a rotary tiller on/off a trailer, etc.). The bucket has a single hydraulic cylinder, located in the center of the bucket. I am reluctant to use the cylinder in any way as part of attaching a chain for lifting, for fear of bending it in some way.<br>

I seem to left with wrapping a chain around the exterior of and center on the bucket. I would then attach the free end of the chain, which is dangling over the front edge of the bucket, to the load.<br>
<br>
Is this approach safe/OK for the tractor? Any better ideas that are simple/straightfoward would be appreciated.<br>

Thanks for the advice on engine cover removal, and Murf's advice to put the brush gruard back on!!! You are correct, I have used the FEL to move a rotary tiller (400 pounds of useful steel) a couple of times but, thankfully, it did not bang into the tractor. However, I agree that at some place/time "Murphy's Law" (no offense, pls) will strike.

I want to establish a new lawn over soil with a high clay content, and could use some advice.<br>

Last fall, on about 1/2 acre, I tilled down 6 inches, and added dolomite limestone per spec, and twelve yards of topsoil. (The Ph is now 6.8) I then put down annual rye grass as a cover crop over the winter.<br>
<br>
This spring, I want to put down new Tall Fescue seed. Should I till the rye under, and if so, to what depth?<br>
<br>
The nurseryman where I got the seed says to "just get the seed in contact with the ground" when I sow it, which implies that I don't need to rake the seed in/cover it over at all.<br>
<br>
Advice on how to sow the seed and work it in would be appreciated. Would a harrow rake be useful to work it in? I hand-raked the annual rye last fall, and that took a while.<br>

I put down about 1/2 acre of sod last spring, and the turf was good looking/weed free. Last summer was drier and hotter than normal, and the turf began to look puny/yellow/bare in spots. <br>

I'm thinking about overseeding the bare/puny spots with the same mixture of tall fescue as the sod. Do I first need to remove the thatch from from lawn, and if so, what technique/tool would work best?<br>

Thanks for the tip on fastening strips--I'll see what's available, and may come back for your experienced advice.

My hope is that by shortening the boards each by 1/8 of an inch, I'll do away with the warping problem. The fastening strips may solve the screw breakage problem.

Pls note that the advice you are getting is from seasoned vets who generally use heavy-duty equipment--which you do not. Your BX2350 is limited in what it can do, in comparison to the equipment used by most of the folks on this chat site.

I'm not suggesting that you are getting poor advice--far from it. I would suggest that you need to tailor the size and type of implement that you get to the capability of your BX2350's 23 HP.

Can you tell me who, based on your experience, the better manufacturer was/is?

I know that you in particular place a value on the quality of the dealerhip that stands behind the piece of equipment. I've done most of my research on line, but I'm trying to track down that part of the equation as well.

Any advice you could give me would be appreciated.

I'm new to the tractor business, and have a Kubota BX2350 SCUT for landscaping/lawn mainteance work. My first attempt at having new lawn area hydroseeded left me with nothing but weeds after 6 months. I believe the soil,which has a high clay content, was too compacted to permit proper root growth.<br>

After looking at this site's posts for the last year on ploughs/tillers, I'm inclined to try a rotary tiller to prepare the soil for another shot at putting down seed this spring. I have about one half acre of ground to work. <br>

Any problem with this approach, or do I need to use a different attachment to get deeper into the soil?

I had roughly the same problem as Dave in Idaho. I was a premium member, beginning in Nov of 2004 under userid bobkro32. I renewed my premium membership the following year via credit card, but the renewal did not get posted to my account. I was not able to visit the site much in 2005/2006, so the fact that I was not a premium member did not matter that much.

About three weeks ago, I attempted to logon/renew membership using the bobkro32 user id, but got a form reply that the bobkro32 user id was in use. I registered for premium membership under my current user id of bobkro, but have not received confirmation of membership, despite several messages to the webmaster.

I would like to regain my old user id of bobkro32 and premium membership. Can you help or point me in the righ direction?

Gents--

Sorry for the delay in responding with thanks to all those who responded to my question on tire pressure. I thought I was asking a straight forward and would get a simple answer, but I didn't, and that is why I enjoy this website so much.

Let me summarize the answers that I received to my question on the correct pressure for the front tire on a Kubota BX2350:

Answer #1: Look in the manual (22 PSI for bar tires)
Answer #2: Look on the side of the tire (122 PSI)
Answer #3: Get two to three bars on the ground (about 10-14 PSI)
Answer #4: Depends on the load; get a good footprint.
Answer #5: Back off of the max on the side of the tire by about 20 pounds

I've been following the postings on this site off and on for about three years on a variety of topics, and its the insights provided in the postings that make much more sense that what you find in the manual or written on the side of a piece of rubber.

You guys have given me the range answers that I needed, and a little bit of the knowledge that is behind those answers.

Tks for info on tire pressure amounts. I'm not sure about the technique for inflating the tires. Wehn I try to check the pressure with a gage, I get fluid in the gage. From another post on this website, I apparently need a gage that designed to operate with filled tires. OK.

Is there a secret to inflating the tires? Given that I am forcing air into the tire when I inflate it, as opposed to letting air (and fluid) out of the tire when I check the pressure, may I presume that a standard air compresser will work, and that I need not worry about fluid getting in to the compresser?
