Sorry to report that I gave up and sold the tractor, bought another. Actually, I thought I would put it out there for a ridiculous price- and it sold. The power of the kubota brand!

The b series of that vintage were not considered farm tractors, so they skipped stuff like gauges, ground speed charts, live pto and position control. However the owners manual will tell you speeds in each gear. Post the question on other sites as well in hopes of finding an owner with a manual (I sold mine or I would type it out for you)

To answer your real question, though - I think your 5th will be slower than the 8n 3rd. And I was never able to comfortably mow in 6th either.

I just want to clarify that the scenerio the original poster outlined would cause a lot of grinding of gears. If you let out the clutch in neutral and bring the hog up to speed, then step on the clutch and attempt to shift into gear, the tranny will still be spinning and there will be a significant grind. As others replied, the proper method is to let out the clutch at a low RPM in drive gear, and then increase RPM.

This issue of 'pushing' always surprises me. No tractor sold in the US since 1960 has been without a built in over-running clutch, from what I have seen....so the pushing issue is moot unless we are talking 8ns here

What is your budget? I am always frustrated that people lay out their needs with no mention of budget. For 2500 bucks you could get an old ford and a 1000 dollar finish mower and you are theoretically in business. I am on my second tractor with no loader, no real complaints. Sure I would love one, but not enough to justify the cost. Someday.

This has been terribly fun reading, and I will throw my own bit in. I currently own a MF made by Hinomoto. Previously an old Kubota. Both present challenges when it comes to buying parts. But if you think this grey market issue is about parts, then what about the brand new -US legal - ROPS touting CHINESE tractors sold by NorTrac? Some poor working bloke is going to slap down his money for one of these beauties and at 100hrs need some parts. Good luck!

Heck I have a friend with an '89 Kubota that needed to wait 2 months to find a differential part, in the middle of the spring planting season.

So difficulties with parts is not a grey market-only problem. It is a function of overall supply. There are not millions Yanmars out there in the US, so parts are tricky. Just like Zetor, DF, Long, Same, Jinma, Nortrac, etc.

When you buy a used grey market tractor you are paying less money and accepting more risk, as with any used purchase.

As for the comment that someone who can only afford $4,000 shouldnt be buying tractors, go climb a tree. Not everyone wants to make a tractor payment :)

I assume you are looking at a B6000, which is first of all, quite old (78-81 or so. This biggest factor of the B6000 is that the PTO spins backwards, so only implements designed for the tractor will work - ie you cannot add a brush hog, or rear finish mower etc. If it comes with attachments, you may be in luck. I had one, nice little tractor, but very small and lite - not really a good candidate for a loader or other dirt moving tasks. I would hope it is cheap - $2000 for tractor alone, tops, a bit more with more implements.

I assume you know this is a garden tractor. 2000 might be a good price if it is a diesel. The hours 'on motor' usually means the original motor went south, so that is always a bit of a red flag. I dont know much about the lawn and garden kubotas, other than the new G1800 series.

I think that is a fair price, although you didnt mention if it was 4wd. If 2wd it is a bit high, since you can usually find clean 2wd compacts around $3500-4000; then add in for the attachments.

Most importantly, prices vary by region and if it is the best tractor you can find, and you like it, go for it. The 6200 is a fine machine with good parts availability and a good track record.

Just wanted to throw out there that I have a 210-4 that starts very well in super cold temps, so I dont think it is inherent with this 2cyl design.

I own a 4wd 210-4 that is currently for sale in the classifieds of this site. Very nice, heavy tractor-my manual says 2600lbs for the 4wd model. You didnt mention if the one you are looking at is 4wd; I am asking $6500 but have seen them as low as 5,000 if in poorer condition.

Even if you dont by mine :) you will be happy, very powerful, good winter starter, nice operator layout.

This has been an interesting thread. I guess the bottom line is that this is a global economy, and stuff is partiall built and assembled, and resold, etc all over the place!

I for one would love to get my hands on a brand new-old MF 135 diesel, even if I have to get it from Pakistan :)

I will throw in my experience which may not be completely helpful - I have spent time on an 8n, and time 3ph snowblowing with a live PTO case. I would echo the largest concern that operating a snowblower of any kind requires multiple speed settings. The N reverse is too fast for most snowblowing that I have done, and would cause clogging or snow to push over the blower. And the lack of live pto would be frustrating at best, especially since i have found in some conditions that stopping the blower causes it to freeze up, only to shear a pin when the clutch is re-engaged. Finally, the lack of live hydraulics would also be a bit trying, but you are already used to that if you have an N.

I have been backblading snow for quite a while, and while it is not the sexiest way to remove snow, it has worked for years and years. My hunch is that you were moving in your higher range gear, making it very easy to apply whopping forces quickly. For this reason, I keep the speed down considerably when backblading. For one thing, the entire design of your 3ph is really intended for pulling, not pushing. Thus the blade is the same. I will be interested to see if the dealer can do anything for you. It is also important to note that the Frontier line of implements is supposed to be Deere's value line, hence lighter quality. In the future, I think you will be fine to slow down a bit to avoid other snafus.

I think you really need to do significant homework to successfully buy a used tractor. Hang around on this and other sites reading, reading, reading. Then hit the field. I would run away from anything with weld repairs on the frame or axles etc, unless you are buying a very cheap tractor. The fan on a B7100 should not hit the radiator, if that is what you are asking - and a replacement radiator would be pricey, so if it is damaged look elsewhere. B7100s and other older kubotas have a thermosyphon cooling system that you should research. Try the hydro in both ranges and try to find a hill to climb up. Anyhow, if all of the things you mentioned were present on a single tractor, it is a hunk of abused junk.

I used to have a 78 Kubota B6000 with just 12.5 gross HP and it had a kubota (woods) 40" tiller - worked great. Certainly no shortage of power, even in hard clay. Twice I broke a shear pin on the tiller, and made sure to run a very light shear pin to protect the PTO and tranny. I would think your JD should spin a 48" just fine.

the 205-4 is 4wd. Therefore the engine should be the same. As you may know this tractor was made by Toyosho/Hinomoto, so if you need engine parts you can start talking to grey market folks who sell Hinimotos. I am sure you can find an engine, at what cost......i dont know.

I have a 210-4 (4wd) that I recently purchased. That is a good price by my experience. Anyhow, the tractor is made by Toyosho/Hinomoto in Japan, and is mechanically identical to the Hinomoto E232 and Allis Chalmers 5020. In the limited time I have used the tractor, I have been very pleased. Parts are available but you may have to wait a week or two on something major, and prices will be a bit high. This is no different than many other older Jap tractors. I think it's a good by for $3500

I previously owned a B6000. I dont know if yours is 4wd, but either way you will find that the cost of a loader (1500-2000) far outweighs the work that you can accomplish with such a small, light tractor. Homestead does make a loader that fits, and some have been pleased with the results. In terms of rear bucket scoops, I bought a 30" model for my B6000 and found that it barely fit and did not lift high enough to easily dump. However, a 24" would probably work very nicely. You still might have to modify the lift links to get it high enough to dump, but at least the width wont be a problem. You will definately need front weights of some kind, since the whole tractor weighs 800lbs and you can easily put 300lbs of dirt/scoop weight on the back....lots of wheelies in your future.

I dont know what your budget is, but I would think seriously about buying something as old as an 'N' for a primary use tractor. I too live in upstate NY, and for the price of a decent 'N' (3500) you could buy a newer ford 2000 or 3000, or a Massey Ferg 135 which would give you more power and a live PTO.
