Let's muddy the water a little. Since efficiency, in the strict sense, is the ratio of energy out vs. the energy(btu's) of the fuel you put in, then a 3 cyl would generally be more efficient then a 4, since the internal friction of a 3 cyl is less. The total circumference of the cylinder walls in a 4 is greater than a 3; there are 4 journal bearings, etc. Actually, a single cylinder would theoretically be most efficient, if you could keep it from vibrating itself to pieces. I believe a 3 cyl is generally more efficient, a 4 cyl is smoother, but none of the differences is particularly important. Many other factors are much more important to an engine value than the number of cylinders. See ? Clear as mud.

The transmission on my 4300 has a plate from Funk Manufacturing, in Kansas.
The engine is of course, a Yanmar.

On my 4300, the rear wheels are in two pieces, the center hub and the rim. Between them, there are about eight different rear widths that you can pick from. I have R1's, other treads may use different wheels.

OK, I'm curious. I have a JD4300 4wd sync/reverser R1's, and I can't tear up any grass unless I turn it to the stops. I'm not mowing in 4wd, so what's the difference here? Is my grass tougher? Are you in 4wd? Not being cute, I just would like to figure out the difference.

Well, no, I don't know for sure that I do need them. I've never plowed on asphalt before, and I just didn't want to tear anything up, or wear out the blade edge.

Dennis - I have a Woods HBL72 I use with a JD4300. This is the old Gill line that Woods purchased, very similar to MonroeTufline GB4. Angle, tilts, offsets. <br>Very heavy, (500-600#) and very useful. I would trust both Woods and MonroeTufline.

Don't know if it would work for you, but I bought one of those equipment umbrellas<br>at Agri-Supply for about $60 for my 4300 with folding ROPS. I just wanted sun protection;<br>I don't care if I get wet, but I can't stand to get burnt. It fit on fine, works<br>pretty well. Plus it comes off in a second.

I paid 17.9k for 4300, folding rops, 4wd 12/12 sync with AG's and 430 loader,<br>no mid pto. Didn't really haggle 'cause the dealer is a neighbor and I thought<br>I better stay on his good side. Sure enough, this 4300 got the recall for transmission,<br>and we are trying to schedule the work. In creeper gear when it's hot, it wants to<br>back up even with the sync in neutral. Not good. I have confidence that dealer<br>and Deere will make it right. Dealer had a small fire in his shop and is a little<br>overwhelmed right now. I have not seen any of the problems regarding lack of<br>power in high range, but I don't have the hst. I own a 4300 w/syncreverser and can confirm that it will pull uphill at max rpm <br>in high range/high gear. I did get a recall letter on this tractor concerning the<br>trans; a thrust bearing, or clutch shims, or both. I suppose I should be glad<br>that at least Deere had the integrity to tell me about it, and fix it at their<br>expense. I will schedule the fix after the busy season. Overall, I am happy <br>with the unit.
