I am on year 2+ with my 4400. The only problem was the seat switch failing and battery leaking. Everything was repaired on warranty. It sounds like the dealer might be over his head in some of these repairs.

Match the right tool to the application. I have seven springs on the property that need periodic attention, hence the backhoe. I also have a problem with getting rid of things. A rototiller that Dad bought in 63 is still used and maintained. A Cub 1282 and a wife from 82 are both still retained.

I looked at the tractor as being the ultimate long term relationship, that it should out survive me for the further benefit of my family. The fact that I can carry the acquistion cost over the more years, the lower the total cost of ownership.

I believe that from an engineering standpoint there are two trends. The north American approach often is slightly over engineered for the application and the european approach attempts meet the application for the lowest cost of manufacturing possible. Both have there merits. However, matching the application means you will just cut grass and not attempt regualrly other things that exceed the intended propose.

John Deere seems to be more of the north American engineering approach. Extra thickest to casting, a cast oil pan, etc. It exceeds the normal application requirements which is good for times when I am dragging logs or neighbors' stuck trucks or 20 teen aged kids from church in our 1934 grain wagon. I believe that the extras have a higher acquistion cost but due to a longer life expectancy will yeild a lower total cost of ownership. However, do what makes you happy!

I recently bought a $500 cat 1 post hole digger. I ending up modifying it to make it work better with my 4400. The boom needed to be off-set by 3" to clear the top link mount and it needed to be reinforced with a 36" rib. These weld mods were done in a few hours for $50. The JD digger was close to $1500.

I have dug nearly 100 holes for posts and for trees. If the auger has good cutters, adding down force should not be necessary for your post hole work at home.

Thanks Dave: As of today, the good news is my dealership is fixing the problem under warranty. I have had good service from them and they plan to replace the battery, alternator and heater. Can I anticipate further corrosion to the screen and rad?

I have a near cherry 1282. We use it for trimming, hauling, and light snow plowing. Since moving into the hills of Kentucky, the 12 HP Kohler seems taxed when cutting and climbing.We did a light rebuild 5 years ago but it starting to show signs of stress and has started to consume oil.

I have recently acquired a used 18 HP Kohler Command from a trashed mid-90s Cub. Short of trial and error, is there any reference material or place for guidance on swaps? I have helpful and willing neighbors looking forward to winter nights in the garage. But, to prevent a divorce and a large beer bill, I would like a plan to keep this project short.

My John Deere 4400 is equipped with R4 tires. The rear wheels do not drain off water. They are beginning to rust at the connection of the dish and the rim. As are the tires, the rims appear to made by Titan. Any suggestions?
