This tractor engine is really strange. I add the proper amount of oil and start it up for a minute to fill the new filter and when I check it after a minute or two of rest, the oil is at the proper level. When I check it again the next morning, the oil registers as over-filled on the dip stick..

I got my tractor back from the dealer today. I passed on the feed back I received from the Tractor Board when they picked it up. The dealer adjusted the GST in a way that makes the shifts stronger and they changed the transmission oil and filter. The chattering is gone. Thanks for the advice.

If you do end up with a brush-hog mower, get the optional grass blades. The are still heavy duty blades but the are built with a twist to them. This gives a little lift to the grass for an improved cut. And if you hit a little brush, they cut right through with no problem. They cost about $30 for both blades.

From your pictures it looks like your present equipment is a good match to your property but I get the impression you want a backhoe!! I finally have one and I have more fun digging holes than I would have imagined. If you are going to dig out stumps then the L Series is the way to go. If not, then the B Series tractor would do the trick. There seems to be a good supply of used B Series units here in New England. The dealers tell me they were trade-ins for new L Series. A used Kubota is a better bet that a new Chinese knock-off. Good luck.

Look into a compact tractor of around 30 horse power, plus (not minus). Even with a compact, there will be times when you wish for a bigger one. The B series are just to small, unless you have two life times to get things done.

I've had an HST for four years and from the first day, noticed the "mechanical, loose sounding, gear noise" when the transmission is in neutral. Especially when the oil is hot as after mowing a pasture. My dealer told me that the HST produced more noise than a standard tranission and not to worry. I've used both the standard UDT and the Super UDT hydralic oil with no changes in noise. The tractor still work perfectly. I'm teaching myself not to notice the noise.

Almost everyone who wants a tractor has the same problem of deciding on the right size. When I started looking I noticed that all of the late model used tractors at the dealers were the smaller units. Many had mowers and backhoes to match the tractor. They sure were cute and looked like a lot of fun to use and fun was important to me.I had the good fortune to have a dealer that answered my questions honestly, offered good advice and I had the good fortune to believe him. The reason he said that there were so many previously owned little tractors availabled, is that they were too small to do much actual work and after a year or two thay were traded in for a larger size. I bought the Grand L Series and have enjoyed every hour on the meter. I admit I have been up against several stumps and large rocks where I wish I had an even larger tractor but I'm quite happy with my Grand L tractor.

I use my Bush Hog 60 for both pasture and lawn mowing now with quite acceptable results. My tractor dealer sells "grass blades" for the Bush Hog. They might even be manufactured by Bush Hog. The blades are made with a little twist, much like a finish blade, which sucks up the grass to be cut much better than the standard Bush Hog blade that came with the mower. The price is pretty good as well. $30.00 for both blades. These "grass blades" are still heavy duty. I don't change them when I have to cut small brush. No problems.
