I suppose then, without understanding what the difference is and what the results of using a different oil, I should use the Kubota UDT exclusively?<br>

Could I have a very short answer to what the real differences are and how the performance of the tractor will be impacted?

I just purchased a B2400 (I am the one who rolled the tractor when it popped out of gear) and I hope someone will be able to provide some help.

My owners manual says to hold the key to heat the glow plugs for just a few seconds before you turn the key all the way to the start position. When I hold the key for 3 to 5 seconds in the "heat glow plug" position and then turn the key to start the engine, the engine does not crank. I hear a click, but nothing happens. I then turn the key back off and hold it in the "glow plug heat" position and try to crank it again. Still, the engine does not crank. I generally have to hold the key in "glow plug heat" for 20 plus seconds and then when I try to start it cranks and starts immediately.

Is there something in the start sequence that will not allow the engine to crank until the glow plugs are hot enough to allow the engine to start?

Should my engine crank after only holding in the glow plug heat position for only 3 to 5 seconds?

I am heating glow plugs much longer than the manual says that I should to get the engine started.

Should the engine crank even if the glow plugs are not hot?

The engine does not respond in the way the owner's manual describes the start procedure.

This is my first tractor, I have a lot to learn.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

To answer a couple of questions.

I tilted the seat forward and was able to see the entire lever and linkage of the Hi/Lo shifter. There is no interferance at all.

I did lose some fluid. As the tractor rolled down hill, the ROPS forces the back end of the tractor to cover more ground with every roll and after the third roll, the back end of the tractor was down hill and therefore stopped rolling. I first thought I had torn something up as oil was pooring out the transmission housing. I then realized, after a closer inspection, that oil was coming out the vent. I had to put ~2 gal fluid back in. The engine oil was fine.

After reading Art's comments, it is possible that my left leg rubbed the shift lever. I was going up and down the incline and as I would turn at top and bottom, I would shift from left to right in the seat. I suppose it is possible that my left leg made contact and helped push the lever forward to the neutral position. I am just guessing here. If this is the case, the bungee cord would prevent this inadvertant act. I already have the bungee cord rigged up. It can't hurt.

I will experiment some on the tractor, on level ground of course, to see if I can learn anything else about this incident. I will pass on any learnings.

I must say, with this new machine, and having this incident so quickly after the purchase, I am a little apprehensive about climbing back on. Although, I know I have to.

There is a 1996 B2400 HST with a 60" belly mower and a front end loader available to me. It has 560Hrs and the asking price is $8800.

Does this sound reasonable?

I understand the new BX series tractors have an engine that runs at higher RPMs than the older B series tractors. What is the real difference in these engines? Does this have any effect on the life of the engine? Is this a concern I should have?

Thanks for all the input.

When I say a steep slope, this is not real severe. When I try to mow around the slope, the front end of the Gravely works it way down the slope making it impossible to mow with any consistancy. I have tried to mow up and down but the gravely just spins going up which makes it impossible. I end up mowing down, driving back up the drive way and then taking another pass. It takes a long time to mow.

My thought for the B7100 were, it has much larger tires, it has 4WD, and it has considerable weight on the front end which should improve steering.

The dealer did offer to allow me to take it home and try it out free of charge as I have already told him my situation.

In addition, I have also spoken with the previous owner, looked at his property and he has a slope very simlar to mine. He said it did a wonderful job, around and up and down the slope.

I suppose the real question now is the price. It has set outside on the dealer lot since early last spring when the previous owner traded it in. It has some rust developing in many areas on the tractor and mowing deck.

Is $8000 too much for this machine?
