Danny... My TC29D runs my 5-ft 'el-cheapo' bush-hog easily. (Mostly grass, but I let it grow pretty big between mowings.) It's less of a load than my 6-ft finish mower (and that in short grass). I usually find myself going about 2/3 to 3/4 of max in 2nd range. If you have lots of brush it'll be a little more of a load. Seems like a good match to me.

Keith... I came down to the same two tractors. I got a NH TC29D last fall, and so far have no regrets. Two things mainly decided me - at that time there was a *long* waiting time for 4000-series HST JDs, and I really liked the ergonomic features of the NH. I think the long lead time issue has eased a little, but I think NH still has everybody else beat in ergonomics (things like the telescoping 3-pt ends, swivel seat, control placement, etc). A good dealer is important... I had some minor after-delivery issues that were taken care of promptly and cheerfully. I got the TC29D, 7308 loader, and a Land-Pride 6-ft rear finish mower. Already had some other things; previously had an old Ford 8N. I think they're both good tractors, but there's my 2 cents.

Danny... I have a TC29D, bought last fall. No temp-guage problems so far. The shifting issue is, unfortulately, normal. As the others have said, you have to "nudge" the gears a bit to shift into a range. For the PTO, briefly ease up on the clutch just a bit (not all the way!) and shift. For the lo/mid/hi range, don't even use the clutch; just tap the HST pedal a bit and shift. If you hear gears grinding, you're not quite getting it right. I'm happy to say I've had no major problems with mine so far, and am thoroughly enjoying it!

Dennis... I *think* I originally found CTB through Yahoo. I used to have a Ford 8N; found a good discussion site for them, and was looking for a new "home" after I sold it and was planning a new purchase. I really appreciate CTB - it helped me make an informed decision for my new toy... er, umm... workhorse. Thanks for all your effort!

Chris is right. My TC29D has the same setup (turfs & loader). The book *and the tires* say max 22 psi (I just looked). Chris, my dealer had 'em inflated to 28 on delivery. I questioned him about that, and he said that was their standard practice for turfs & loader, and they'd never had a problem with that. I compromise and use 25 for loader work, and let them down to 18-20 otherwise. (Less pressure = consideribly softer ride.) I don't use the loader much, so that works OK for me.

Danny... I bought the one from Tractor Supply several years back, and used it a lot with my old Ford 8N. I still have it, although haven't used it since I got a new tractor with a front loader. As someone else said, its strong point is being able to rip into the ground (if you have the power and traction). Great for digging ditches etc. I have an old Ford sales video from when the 8N was new, showing a farm pond/dam being built with 4 or 5 8Ns with rear scoops! My only real problem was that if the load of dirt was too far to the back (opposite the cutting edge), it didn't want to dump when the rope was pulled. I never even thought of adding hydraulics to it, but some type of dump-assist would be nice. In general, you can move a lot of "stuff" with 'em!

I"m certainly no expert, but have started several thousand sq. ft. of "K-31" fescue around my new house in the last 5 years, with excellent success. I'm in central Kansas. It gets almost too hot & dry for it here in Summer, but I've found that, once it's started, if you don't "baby" it by watering all the time, it will survive (even tho it turns brown in late summer from the heat). I think it's more like "tall" fescue; at least never noticed any "runners".

Cutter... I'm sorry to hear about your problems with the TC29, but I'm well
satisfied with mine (bought last fall). Have had a couple of minor problems
with tires, which the dealer made right; (everybody... a good dealer is *very* important!) otherwise everything seems to be OK. I really like the tractor, especially the ergonomics (very comfortable swivel seat, telescoping 3-pt arms, control placement, etc). What exactly was rusted, and what parts

Jim... Like you, I thought the suitcase weights (New Holland) were a little pricey, but I decided to get them, rather than some type of wheel weights, because they're easily removable. My tractor is mainly for mowing, where extra weight is undesirable, so most of the time the weights are not used. But I can add weight to either the front or the back as needed. (Front has a built-in bracket for a couple of the weights, for rear I got a small 3-pt carrier that will hold up to seven. It's a N-H part, but would fit any cat-1 3-pt.) Yes, you do have to remove the front ones to use the loader because of clearance.

Well, here's my 2 cents on how I settled on blue (TC29D last fall): I looked at green, blue, and orange. Like you, equally good dealers for all. Kubota literally didn't fit me - I'm over 6 ft and over 200 lb, with arthritis affecting my knees. The operator platform on the Kubota B series cramped my legs too much, and the L series were a little more tractor than I wanted. JD - I was put off by the first-year production problems reported here, and by the long lead time. NH was comfortable, "tried and true" construction, and readily available. Don't have many hours yet, but so far I'm happy with my choice.

Harold... I'm not sure there is any such thing as a "good price" (g) but last fall I paid $19,800 for pretty much the same setup in Wichita, KS. Instead of belly mower, I got a rear-mount 72" finish mower, $1630 for that. So you can do your own math. I'm perfectly satisfied w/o supersteer; and I haven't noticed any of the "scuffing" that the JD owners have been discussing here. Incidentally, I've become pretty much convinced that, for mowing and other PTO work @ 540 RPM, the "extra" 4 HP of the TC29D vs. TC25D may not appear. It's only about a $500 premium, though... If anyone from NH is here, this could be settled by providing us with HP-vs-RPM figures for these two tractors.

Hello all... Someone asked a while back as to whether the pricey ($130 + shp + tax) NH service manual was worth while. I took the plunge, and got it today... Looks good. It's about 1.5 inches of books. There are 13 "sections" arranged in about seven books. You get a nice fat 3-ring binder to hold everything. It covers a whole bunch of models - 1530, 1630, 1725, 1925, TC25, TC25D, TC29, TC29D, TC33, TC33D. Sections are - Engine Systems; Fuel System; Electrical System; Clutches; Transmissions; PTO; Diff/Rear Axles/Brakes;Hydraulic; Steering; Front Axle; Supersteer/Sensitrack; Wheels & Tires; Separating the Tractor (whew...). I hope to be able to service my TC29D after the warranty expires, and this looks very helpful. No, I don't work for NH! I guess it's money well spent (sigh...)

Kirk... The descriptions of draft control have been good. Just one thing to add: The old Ford 8Ns (not 9N or 2N) had draft control (you could flip a lever and select either position control or draft control). Draft control was always troublesome. They had a constant problem with "bobbing"... that is, the plow would constantly raise and lower a little "by itself". They never did get this truly fixed, and many owners stopped using it because of the problem.

Richard... I have about 5 acres, rural central Kansas, as follows: .5 acre nice lawn around house, 2 acres semi-nice (native grass cut short) around yard, 2.5 acre meadow/pasture rough. Had a Ford 8N for several years, just graduated to a NH TC29D. Mostly for mowing, but also a little dirt work (got a loader), typical driveway maintenance, etc, etc. I'd be lost without a little tractor of some kind! Hope others reply... I'd be interested too.
