We sell Jd and Farmoyl at our store. Farmoyl has a really nice oil called premier 2000. It is a partial synthetic and a 10-30 probably flows better than a straight 10 wt. the price is only about 1/3 more than regular oil. We use the same oil in our pickups and our shop tractor that sits outside on nights that get down to -20 below. You can really really tell the difference. Not sure where you live but if you can find a farmoyl dealer you will be very happy.
Another trick you might think of is buying a magnetic oil pan heater. I'm pretty sure that the pan has a "flat spot" that you could stick one on. You could put a timer on the heater to come on about 2-3 hours before you might use it in the morning. It will warm from the bottom up and really really get the oil flowing fast.

PSIMONSON has it right. But I find the opposite--usually when I shut the tractor off it's still in gear. So, I just hop on the seat--hold the key on start for 5-10 sec's.....put it in neutral and start it right up. Just my procedure.

It's my opinion that r-4's will give you more bit in "loose" conditions. Mud, slush, wet ground etc. Turfs would probably outpull the r-4's on 1ce becasue you'd actually have more "tire on the ground". Like noted above your tires are actually working on ground that was already cleared. I probably wouldn't let the snow conditions make the call on the tire but the mowing conditions. If you plan on having your tractor on lawn all the time go with the turf. If you do some trail, loader, and lawn combo work I'd say go with the r-4's. Just my opinion and your mileage may vary!!

Call 1-800-jdlawns and tell them you need to talk to a service rep. Explain to them that you know about the "fix as fail" mod and think it's unfair that becase you had low hours on the machine you now have to pay the price. If they are not positive with you ask who you can write a letter to. ALSO--ask if they refuse to pay for it in full if they would "participate" in the repair. All these companies have invented extended warranties not just to make more money but it is sometimes their "way out" of post warranty help if you didn't spend the big bucks on the extended warranty. I can say for a fact that Deere is willing to "participate" somewhat if your selling dealer will participate also.

For the limitted time you might need a heater you might want to look at a magnetic oil pan heater. I think the flat part of the oil pan will work. I think these heaters have a big "plus" becaue they warm up the engine oil and the heat rises from there!! You could slap one on the bottom of the pan and hook up a timer that would come on about 3 hours before you had to use it to save elec.

You might try and find out if a set of "Gator Blades" are made for your mower. They really send the grass out of the mower deck in a nice pattern. They also seem to reduce the partical size alot because instead of a normal "airfoil" they actually have raised "teeth" to recut and launch out the clippings.
