Chris, I am using info gathered from this site. Chuck Westerfield did a post describing the old axle vs new. Quite simply, the old axle had two pistons one to each side, the new axle has one piston with a connecting rod. One post I read said that when Deere designed the first axle they made it stout enough for loader work . When commercial groundskeepers mowed with it they encountered the scuffing problem. I guess Deere figured when they first addressed the issue that if you didnt have the belly mower, your were not going to mow so, why replace a very stout axle that was perfectly functional. Now, as best I can understand, everyone is getting the new axle.
Read the posts from Mike S, he has had the most difficulties that were all taken care of under warranty. He has promised that when he has the time he will post all of his experiences. He's been great with info. Hope this info helps.

I really hate that all you people who believed in Deere are having these problems. It takes away any joy from the small tractor ownership experience. I thank you for being honest and helping those of us who are deciding on a tractor to have the best available information. Keep after your local dealers...it seems that Deere responds to their input.

When I first approached my dealer about a 4300 hst he stated that they would be in short supply until the middle of June...that was April. Naturally I sarted looking at the 4400hst. I the mentioned the postings about the {bad}-scuffing front axle and he stated that he hadnt heard about it. So, I took him outside a showed him the new design vs the old design. So, either he truly was ignorant of the problem or he was going to let me reveal every issue that I was aware of and respond accordingly. I shutter to think what may have happened if I wasnt reading these posts and kept current on all the developments. I was dealing with the owners son so either they were sitting on info or they were just not keeping up on current developments...Deere service bulletins etc.

To all you 4xxx series owners, those that have had problems and those that have not, that have patiently responded to my questions I just want to make it perfectly clear that I hope you have a problem free tractor. I really would like for Deere to succeed with this line. The features that they offer are really nice. My only comment is that the number of posts indicating problems with axles, transmissions, dash-fogging,pto failure, brakes sticking has caused me to step back. I wish that the Kubota 2910 had the features that I like on the Deere, then the decision would be easy. I 'm going to wait and see what owners like Mike S posts on his 4400 owners board before I make a decision. Hopefully, the mechanical difficulties were isolated instances and these Deere problems will soon go away. Im ready with my checkbook.

Jack D, You ole devil dog always defending the colors. I was raised by two Marine Corps officers...thats right, my Mom was an officer..WWII era. I did my time as expected. That aside, enough is enough, Deere put a product out that was clearly defective. Those Japanese......what to do..QQQ. My Mom wont ride in my Toyota. Im staring to believe that maybe my wallet is more important...QQQ. Give me a break I dont believe that, but I do believe that I can wait until this shakes out. Im not sure I like what I see on the horizon.

I read your post regarding the 4400. Ive been very close to finalizing a deal on this tractor with front end loader,belly mower, 50 inch tiller, new axle etc produced within the last two months. I ve been researching this for three months and you can read my posts here and on Tractorbynet. I strongly urge you to do some research on your own. One guy E-mailed me privately withan extensive list of what has gone wrong with his 4400 including faulty front axle, failed hst, fogging dash. This was an early production model and the problems have been corrected by the dealer. But, like this individual I question why they have had so many problems. Read the Kubota posts...you wont see anything silmiliar. These guys have been very imformative and patient. Im still on the fence but I have to admit that I am seeing orange on that fence. Hope this helps.

I'd like some feedback on the JD4400 HST 4x4. Anyone that has purchased this model with a front end-loader, 50 inch Deere tiller, and 60 inch belly mower, please respond. I saw this model with this mower and the clearance between the rear tires was probably 1 inch in transport mode. With the mower in mowing position the clearance was adequate. User input would be appreciated. Thank You in advance.

Thanks, Jack D and Chuck for the imput. Jack D..former MUD MARINE...qqq. Hoo-Rah Devil Dog. I think the John Deere Is quieter and the implement attachment system is superior. The 4400 that I was considering has the new axle and the new parking brake....a simple pull knob. I went to Carver Equipment in Dunn NC today...three hours down the road. I arrived late in the day and had other engagements in the area...wasnt impressed enough to get out of the truck...maybe unfair...but right up the road...301South was a John Deere dealership that was at least as big if not larger. Dealers are important...and a long distance purchase only makes sense when there are no alternatives.Again thanks for the info..P.S.....as small as Carver is they have not responded to two E-Mails two days old. I am presently looking to trade my JD 345 for a JD 4200 0r 4300. I have read the posts about the axles and hydro and hope that the problems will be resolved before I take delivery in June. My dealer tells me that the 4300 is in great demand and therefore short supply.My question is should I just sell the 345 and purchase a 2710 or 2910 Kubota. I have bad vibes about my local Kubota dealer..ie I'm not sure he will be there next year. I have no such concerns about my John Deere dealer. Please help with your inputs. Thank you in advance<br>
