Mr. Jacobs,

Thanks for your post. You are correct. Kubota specifically warns against using the rear and mid ptos to run implements at the same time. Since I usually have a sickle bar hung on the 3 point, it never occurred to me that it was OK to engage both ptos. Just don't have an implement loading the rear pto.

The mid pto and belly mower worked fine.

A way of adding an extra margin of safety is to throw a tarp or blanket over the line or chain. If you do get a break the tarp or blanket will help restrain the the whip.

Go to www.agriculture.com. They have a talk section and within that a machinery talk area. Post your question there. You should get several responses within a short period of time. Those folks are farmers who get into all types of repairs.

The 3 pt pto driven trenchers I'm familar with max out at 30 hp. Call BRADCO at 1-800-922-2981 and ask them.

Forget about the calcium chloride solution. It will eventually rust your wheels. I think most tire dealers now use a water/anti-freeze solution but the best would be to get the tires foam filled. That not only adds the weight but also makes the tires flat proof.

Check out the farm equipment dealers in your area for a Kuhn tiller. Kuhns are imported from France and are the Mack truck of the tiller world. Do you want a 10' wide tiller? Kuhn makes those and larger.

One feature is that Kuhn does not use a chain drive to transfer power to the tiller blade shaft. It uses gears running in an oil bath. The smaller units can also be offset so you don't need a tiller as wide as your tractor to prevent wheel marks. Kuhns are built strong for commercial use. On the larger units they also offer different blades depending on the type of soil you have. The blades for more difficult soils such clay are different than those on any other tiller I've seen. In fact they're forged.

The larger units can also be purchased with seeders.

Take a look at Ortho's "Brush-B-Gon". I've used it for years on poison ivy and it kills the entire plant. The spray can gives you enough range that you can get the hard to reach plants as well including the ones that have grown up trees. . A can costs a couple of bucks.

The stuff foams up where it hits so it's easy to target only the poison ivy and not kill other plants. I check out the new ivy locations as I work around the place each spring and take an hour or two later to spray them all. End of ivy.

Keep in mind the birds will distribute seeds again next year so chances are you'll still see more the next spring.

I'd go with the ballast for not only front end loader work but also if you have slopes to mow.

Years ago, my father rolled a small Bolens lawn tractor. Afterwards I had lead powder put into the rear tires. You could take that thing anywhere after that and even drag logs with it.
