I will simply assume that Lee was having a bad hair day rather than<br>concluding that he was following the tradition of closing his mind<br>before finding out the facts. I do have a smattering of knowledge regarding<br>the differences between conventional gasoline engines (i.e. modified Otto<br>cycle engines utilizing spark ignition with throttle plate restriction of<br>air intake for varying power) and conventional Diesel engines (i.e. modified<br>Diezel cycle engines utilizing direct fuel injection into gases heated<br>through compression for ignition and which vary the quantity of fuel <br>injected for varying power.) Of course, as Lee undoubtely knows,<br>the two types of engines share the isentropic compression, isentropic<br>expansion, and isochoric liberation of heat cycles and thus are <br>differentiated by whether combustion cycle is a constant volume <br>or a constant pressure process.<br>While #2 diesel is the popular choice for<br>fuel for diesel engines, any fuel which could be injected and which will<br>ignite at the temperatures generated during the compression stroke could <br>theoretically be used. Granted, getting proper ignition from injecting <br>a low energy density gas such as propane would be much more <br>difficult than utilizing a high density fuel such as #2 diesel. <br>My thought was that given the narrow range of flammability of <br>Propane, that through introducing some Propane into the intake <br>air through use of a propane carburetor, that one could then <br>inject directly into the cylinder the remainder of the fuel required<br>to attain the required fuel air mix for combustion. Of course, <br>I considered it unlikely that anyone had gone to this much trouble, <br>but thought I would throw it out - perhaps if the Propane was kept<br>liquid until it was sprayed into the combustion chamber, enough could<br>be introduced in a short enough time to make it actually work.<br>Unfortunately, in truncating my comment, it probably did <br>appear that I didn't have a clue...<br>Having helped develop the teaching materials for a course on auto mechanics<br>for a community college, I can say that at least that course did not get<br>into sufficient detail about diesel engines to shed much light on whether<br>Propane fuel could be adapted for use in a diesel. Of more help would<br>be an engineering course on thermodynamics where they usually<br>contrast the Otto and Diesel cycles and calculate the various<br>efficiencies and entropy vs pressure relationships of the various cycles.<br>Unfortunately, I took my thermodynamics class in the physics department<br>rather than engineering, so I didn't get much of that. So, maybe Lee <br>could help - I always had trouble with calculating those entropy <br>relationships for isochoric vs constant pressure heat transfer;<br>perhaps Lee S. could give me a short tutorial to help me out on this...<br>

There are a number of hand or powered pumps available.<br>Northern Tools (formerly Northern Hydraulics)<br>http://www.northern-online.com<br>lists several in their catalogue but I would assume<br>that any local farm supply store would have them.<br>Several of the pumps listed in Northern's catalogue<br>are electric that are listed for use with diesel but<br>not for gasoline.<br>If you have a local distributor that will deliver the<br>diesel fuel, you might want to either rent one as <br>suggested in a previous post or purchase one - whether<br>or not you choose to elevate it or use a pump. If not,<br>I suppose that you could do like we used to do on the farm<br>when I was a kid and just leave the drum permanently in the <br>back of your pickup and fill it up in town - although that <br>does have a few disadvantages...

I bought a no-name (actually

at a local auction yard that specializes in farm equipment
auctions. They sell a number of different implements at far
lower prices than most dealer prices. If you have an auction
yard in the area and are more interested in a low price than
a known brand, you might give them a call and see if they do
similar sales. I have no idea what is inside the gear box, but
the castings look identical to what is used on the lower end of
some name brand post hole diggers. I was told that they leak a
little grease and I assume that they won't last as long as some
others, but for my needs, that's fine, particularly at $425 for

I was rather disappointed in its capacity,<br>but it is a rather small tractor. <br>I got mine from an auction yard that also sells various no-name<br>farm implements at considerably less than regular dealers. If <br>there is an auction yard in your area that specializes in farm<br>equipment, you might check with them.
