I sympathise with you guys that do excavation work for a living. I have done a couple of small jobs for neighbors free of charge and they are so particular! They give me no room to maneuver my tractor, then they don't want me to dig 2 inches too deep.
Today I am digging shale with the hoe and the neighbor wants me to take the grade down some more but is concerned that I am bringing up too much rock. I tell him better to go too deep and leave it so that he can work it down if he wants. But I can tell that he is nervous. He just wants me to scratch the shale but not really dig it up!
I guess this is where customer relations takes over and you guys act as psychiatrists. My hats off to you all! I am appreciating what you must go through 10 times a day!

Neighborly helping usually is never a problem. At least where I live. But have heard horror stories from other contractors.
Do you have contractors insurance? Touch a phone line on a neighbors land and see if they are willing to take the rap from their homeowners insurance. Chances are they will blame you. Fall into or crush a drywell line...I try and explain this before I dig.
I like my neighbors but I do not tolerate too much meddling (how to do it) when the price is good coffee and conversation (gossip).
Sometimes it is nice to remember the phrase "you get what you pay for..." ....

Anytime I get roped into doing something for friends or family, and I do mean roped, I'll try almost anything to avoid it, I always warn them right up front.
"This is a FREE job, so if there is any problems, just call in another contractor to fix the problem and take the cost of it off my BILL."
That usually sets everything straight right off the bat.
Although I did have one complaint recently, I delivered a bush cord of free firewood to a relative since we always have more than we can use. I later heard back through the grapevine that I had a) dumped it too far away from where it was to be stacked, although I was directed to the spot by the offended party, b) had left it in pieces that were too big, c) had mixed soft & hard wood together, doesn't everyboody need kindling too?, and worst of all, can you imagine the nerve of this, I had not ensured that the load was free of sawdust & bark and it left a huge mess he had to clean up!! I should be slapped for such a thing!!! LOL.

I think the appropriate saying is "Your friends you can choose, but family you're stuck with."....
Oh well, at least he gives us something to laugh about at family events.
