I have been looking for a tractor for a long time. I have gone and looked at so many used tractors that I'm tired of it. My problem is finances. I am having a hard time justifying it to the wife, but with this years snow removal problems, might be able to justify more. I own 94 acres in the lowlands, near Lake Ontario, so property can get pretty moist. I would like to start mowing more of the land around the house, but major leveling and such has to happen first. I currently mow about an acre, and it takes 3-4 hours to do on the lawn tractor. I have a lot of jobs to do if I had a tractor, but sizing is another problem. I would like to till about 10 acres, can a small tractor handle this? I wouldn't mind enlarging a pond on my property - is that possible? Half of my land is wooded, how about logging and trails? I'm sorry to ask so many questions, but there seemed to be a lot of knowledgeable people here that might not mind helping. In or local swap sheet, there is a 1986 Kubota B7100, 4wd, with front end loader, 5' back blade, and a 4' 3-pt. finish mower for $4900. Is this enough tractor for what I want? Is the price right? Please excuse my ignorance, but what hp is this tractor - I guess I could call the guy to find that out, but as I said, I am getting tired of calling and driving around.

94 acres! Great! You need a tractor! Simply pulling out firewood over the years will pay for the tractor.
To some of your questions. Compact diesel tractor are grouped in sizes. The B series Kubota's (including the B7100) are in my opinion too small for your land.
I would look at the Kubota L series, Deere 4200 and up, New Holland TC 25 and up, Cub 7260 and up etc. These tractors all weight around 2,500 pounds (and up) but will over you a great tractor with plenty of power and a loader (around 1,000 pound rated lift) and a 1,600 lb hitch lift.
New they will run you between 16 to 22k (US). A used L2650 or L2900 would be great.
The last thing you want to do, is by something too small and then trade in. You will lose too much this way.

94 acres. You need a tractor and a good size one at that. May want to consider a new one. The interest rates offered by Kubota and NH on new tractors are comparable to new car rates. I think the left over 98s have a even better interest rate depending on length of the term or low/no down payment. Plus you can finance the implements too. It may an easier "sell" to the wife on the monthly payment plan.

If you are just going to mow a few acres and some snow removel, fireword hauling and limited budget a 7100 might work. No tractor will really work for pond building and large amounts of leveling. Its far cheaper in the long run to hire someone with an excavator and bulldozer, plus it saves the wear and tear on your tractor for these tasks. 10 acres is alot to till. A tiller on that size will require a big price tag along with maintenace. Maybe a single plow--No maintenance and far cheaper. 94 with lots of woods does'nt require a huge tractor along with the price tag. It all depends on what you need it for. ....

I would like to thank everyone for the good advice. I appreciate you taking the time to reply. Good message boards, with knowledgeable people, are tough to beat! I will try to drop by on occasion to check up on things and let everyone know how I am progressing in my pursuit of a tractor. I understand your problem of having to stick to a tight budget. If your max price range is under $8000 you should really consider the B7100, $4900 is a good price if it is decent condition. I just bought a B6100, without a loader for $3800. I looked for a tractor for a long time also. With the amount of land you have, buy the biggest tractor you can afford. For the price that B7100 is a good tractor. ....

Hi Lee,An earlier post indicated that a Kubota "B" series might be too small. I tend to agree, but like another post said, it all depends upon what you want to do with it. The Kubota "L" series is more configured towards a regular farm tractor in terms of weight and disposition. I couldn't justify that either and went with a Kioti as it is similarly configured.What kind of budget are you working with? If around the figure you quoted for the Kubota "B," then you will likely have trouble finding a decent heavier unit for that price. If correct, you might want to consider a Ford 8N or similar John Deere or Massey units. There are alot of units of that era and much more recent to be had for that price. If you go that route, you wont get live pto nor fwd.If you are looking for those two features and maybe a loader, around here there also seems to be ALOT of more recent Fords/New Hollands around that price range.Lee ....
