I have a 1997 year model cub 2186 with a 48" deck. I've always had a bit of a problem keeping belts on it, and last year I replaced all 3 deck spindles in hopes that this would help. I just completed serviceing the machine for the upcomming year (including new PTO and deck belts) and when I engaged the clutch the belts started squealing and smoking!! I am about to throw in the towel on this mower unless someone can give me some guidance as to what could be causing this. The spindles are well greased, so I'm not sure what's going on. Any help would be appreciated.

Check the belt idler. Often they get built up with grass underneath and they don't work freely. ....

Thanks, I'll check it out. After a bit more investigation I found that the deck belt(dealer supplied)is extremely loose and slipping. I'm not sure whats causing this, but at least I think I have the problem isolated. ....
