I'm looking for people's experience with the belly mower Mulching kit, specifically for JD's 54"-60". Good/Bad,ect.. I'm also looking into JD's rear mount hydraulic dump leaf/grass bagging system, listed in the brochure. Looks like a winner, but pictures can be deceiving. What have others paid for this system, and would you get it again? Worth the money? Also, does anyone still make those (non-powered) thatching tines that mount to the front of a tractor while you mow? Do they work? Although I've only ever seen them on little 10-12hp mowers. I'm thinking along this route, because I really don't want to spend the money for one of those big expensive pull behind units. And after this draught, the lawn looks like it would greatly benefit from doing it again next spring. My father has a oldie but goodie push type unit, unfortunately it takes hours and hours to do our 2 acre yard. Question for the landscape people: is it good to do it every year? What about aireation?

I have the mulch kit on a 54" deck on JD 445--it does an okay job on our tough bermuda/zoysia grass lawns in North Alabama, but I still have to blow the yard with a back-pack blower to disperse the clippings completely if I only mow once a week. Fescue is no problem. As regards dethatching and aerating--many people indicate aeration may be thought of as another form of dethatching, just takes a litte longer for the thatch to go away. Given the choice between aeration and dethatching, I believe I'd go with aeration. Doing both would be even better of course. Good luck. ....
