My wife made that merger back in 2000. The first thing she did after I bought my new JD was to buy me a cell phone and a subscription with Verizon so if I got hurt on our back 40 I could PHONE HOME.

We use FRS/GMRS radios for short distance communication. I got a pair of mobiles and two base stations, one for the house and one for the shop.
Even line of sight they sure beat screaming over the engine noise from a CUT.
Several of our neighbours have them also, it's handy to ask a neighbour for a hand or if they have the one bolt you need to finish a repair without taking a 10 minute walk across the street.
They are very reasonable in price now and have (depending on model & location) a range of up to 5 miles, certainly they work fine within 1 mile under almost any conditions, even between buildings.

I use GMRS when we are doing off-road trips. The radios are cheap enough in the US, but the license costs $75 for five years. ....
