I have a 125 cub cadet with a kohler engine. After about 20 minutes the engine shuts down like it is running out of fuel.Gas tank has fuel and if i play with the throttle as it is shutting down, the engine will backfire like there is plenty of unburned fuel in the carb.It takes about 5 to 10 minutes to resart and is fine again for 20 minutes or so.sounds like a simular problem like "fredrocksr" is having except mine won't restart right away.I believe it is not a fuel related problem, but a coil problem.does anyone have a thought on this?

The delay in stalling and then in getting restarted could indicate something that is related to heat, or it could be related to restricted fuel delivery. I don't think that working the throttle really eliminates fuel delivery as a potential source of the problem.

What I would recommend in your case is to run till it stalls. Then during the five minute quiet time, pull off a spark plug wire and see if you get spark when the engine will not start. If you have spark, you can focus on fuel delivery. ....

I would say its fuel related. The glass bowl and petcock needs to be clean, and fully opened and gas level all the way up past the petcock valve. The second option is to look
at the choke to see if its closing on you. Carb cleaner would help while tractor is running...this has happened to me many times...make sure filter element is secure and clean. ....

One is electronic, one is the old tried and true points and condenser. Look at both, condenser and coil. Try resetting the points as they may be off on adjustment and causing extra load on the condenser or coil. That should change if they are off on adjustment as to how long it will run before overloading and shutting down again. The backfire tells you that fuel is there and spark is intermittent. ....

I don't know how old the tractor is but the description does sound like the dud coil problem old Ford N's are famous for. If cheap and available I'd replace the coil on general principal because it easier than continuing to test and wonder if that's the problem.

Except for the backfiring, there's room for testing the old blocked fill cap vent trick but only because it's easy to test. Sometimes missing heat-shields cause such things.
