Being offered a kubota 1980's m4050 4wd loader 8x2 trans.
400 hrs. Price around 17K Seems a little high to me but what do I know. Any ideas of its worth? Thank you

Correction the tractor has 800 hrs. The reason I'm interested in the listed price as being fair is these days I could buy a NEW L4300(similiar hp) with a loader for 17K with a warranty and 0-2.9% financing depending on time. So what do you think Art or anyone else about the price of this 4050 considering the way things are these days and the multiple options we all have. I could use this unit but all things being equal is it worth persuing this particular machine and if it is at what cost?. ....

I had to hit another book to get enough info on this tractor. The first book I went to didn't have them in and we were not into the M'series much so I am not on overdrive with knowledge here. They were built between 81 and 88and they have 42 pto horsepower and 48 engine. they used a six cylinder 158 cu-in engine. This is where it gets tough, high book or retail is $9634.00 for a 1988, but they say that it should have 5250 hours. They also say no more than a twenty percent adjustment. That would put it at 11500 roughly, loader is valued at 1500 to 2000, dual valves would be another 300 and if it had a rops canopy that adds another 250. I think he is a little high but I also believe this is more than an L-series tractor. There might be something there that I have missed but that is about where I would value it is 13,500 tops depending on tires and cosmetics. ....

First of all as art alluded to, this NOT an L series tractor. The M series was designed from the ground up as an Ag tractor, more along the lines of traditional NA utility type Ag units. It is NOT meant for cutting the lawn, if you look at it from a spec's point of view you will see that the base tractor weighs 3,740 pounds, has a 158 c.i. 6 cylinder engine (read big torque), and runs 28" rear tires, all pretty standard Ag-type stuff. The comparable L series (L4310) on the other hand is only 3,030 pounds, has a 134 c.i. 4 cylinder engine and only runs 24" tires in the back. Now while most of that 700'ish pounds is engine a lot of it is still taken up by the fact that the M is generally just more robust all over.
As for price, the seller is basically selling the unit now for the same price (less loader) they paid for it 15 years ago. This is not uncommon since the replacement cost is constantly going up by about the same amount as it is depreciating. As Art mentioned though this is NOT refective of what it SHOULD be worth.
Bottom line, IMHO, it is a good unit, if it fits the bill for what you want it for, and you can get it for a price YOU are happy with, go for it. I doubt you would get a new one for close to that cost, and resale only counts if you SELL it, we still have tractors (working) on our farm that are in excess of 50 years old, we paid $300 for them new and they go for $2000 to $3000 now, go figure.

Good job breaking it down more Murf! To go a step further, M4900 is the replacement, they start out about $24,000 retail depending on how equipped, the loader is another 5000 roughly. This is more like $29000. retail to replace. ....

Thanx for all your input. I mentioned the L4300 only as an example of a similiar hp tractor/ldr that can be puchased today for an identical price with a warranty and financing options. I know the m series is thier ag line and it is larger but for my purposes either would work. Lastly any comment on the tract record on the 1980's m series do they have the same trouble free reliability of their compact counterparts? ....

Kubota's equipment that we have been selling is definitly the lowest we have ever seen in repair incident. The old M's we've seen in this area are still good reliable units today. ....
