1301 4WD popping

The front wheels pop like a ratchet effect when in 4wd and under a load.
Was told the drive shaft to the front has a spring on it to keep it engaged and that this spring could be the prob.

Any other ideas or experience out there.

Could very well be mis-matched tire sizes or it could have a stuck differential lock. ....

If it's making a popping sound, I wonder where it seems to be coming from? I also wonder what happens (if anything) if the 4wd control lever is held in engagement by hand while the popping occurs?

I have vague recollection that a front drive shaft coupler problem that may involve a spring was discussed here not that long ago. I sort of think it was on a Yanmar but the coupler is on the TX end rather than the front DIFF end. Finding things in the archives can be a bit tricky since content and subject titles don't always go together very well but there might be some information there.
