I've got transmission/hydraulic fluid dripping from underneath my 1988 JD 750 with MFWD.

I've cleaned things up and crawled underneath, it appears to be coming from the joint between the back of the transmission and the differential. The driveshaft for the MFWD attaches to the bottom of the trans in the same spot, so it might be coming from there as well, but I don't think so at this point.

I've tighened up the cap screws on the MFWD housing. The couple of transmission-to-differential bolts I could get a wrench on were tight. Getting to the rest of them requires some serious disassembly, so I'm putting that off for the moment.

Does anyone know if there's a gasket between the trans and the differential housing?

Has anyone else had this problem?

It's leaking seriously enough that I need to do something about it before the Spring busy season starts.

Thanks for the reply. I don't see any evidence of it coming from the top, but I'll double check. "Always look for the simple stuff first..." ....

Wish I had a definite answer. As near as I can figure it probably would take a manual to determine if a gasket is there. I think tractors even from the same manufacturer come both ways.

Even if a gasket is present, most TX's have oil seals on the shaft ends that would play a larger role keeping the oil inside than a gasket between the case halves. Gaskets seem to be mostly used for small covers that do not receive high loads. A shaft oil seal could be the primary source of an oil leak, and it would be a pretty big job to replace one.

If no gasket is present, then tightening the case bolts won't do much for the leak and might even break something. There are torque specs and sometimes tightening sequences. Unfortunately, even if a gasket is present tightening usually doesn't stop a leak. I hope somebody makes a more positive response.

Got a chance to talk to the mechanic at my local dealer yesterday. Turns out there IS a gasket. He was a little surprised that I had that problem on my 750, but did say it had been known to happen on 950's. He said I could separate things far enough to clean up the gasket and put a little Permatex on it and bolt it back together and that should seal it up.

I do have the factory manual on the tractor, but it wasn't clear from it whether or not there was a gasket there.

I think the back of the trans is open rather than connected to the differential via a sealed shaft. My reasoning is that the rear end uses the same tractor/hydraulic fluid that the transmission uses. Not positive about that, however. ....

Right you are Paul! I spent enough time looking for gaskets in my parts manual that I forgot we're dealing with the joint between the front and back cases. Like you, whether a gasket is there or not isn't obvious even with a repair manual and parts manual that covers all the '10-series Ford compacts.

One thing I'll say about this idea of slightly separating it and applying sealer is that I guess I'd have to take a dealer mechanic at his word. However, I've never had much luck trying to do that, at least with the paper type gaskets I know. They tend to stick to the sides and pull apart, which pretty much ruins the gasket. That is certain to happen if it was put together with gasket sealer and is very likely if it was put together with grease and has been in service for awhile. Maybe the gasket is a different composition then what I've worked with.

The only way I've been pretty sure of getting good seals is to take everything apart and thoroughly clean the surfaces. I've spent a good many hours of the less pleasant rebuild chores scraping gasket surfaces. I hope this is simply old experience with old materials talking.

I hear ya on the "quick fix".

I don't trust the mechanics at this dealer. I made the mistake of getting lazy and having them service my riding lawnmower once. Took me longer to 're-fix' everything that it would have to have done it myself in the first place. This guy is new, but I know the owner, and how tight he is, so I don't get that warm, fuzzy feeling that this guy is any better.

I'm thinking of doing a "double split" in April. By then, the weather will be warm enough to work in my shop comfortably, and I'll have time to get it done before the busy season hits. The plan is to fix the leak between the trans and differential, and replace the clutch while I've got the tractor that far apart. The clutch pedal ain't got much travel left, so it's getting to be that time anyway. ....

Yep, with that sort of plan, an oil pump and a drip pan in the mean time sure seems like a good idea. ....
