I have a JD 4500 with 50 hrs on it and this problem seems to be getting worse. The throttle , when pushed to full or PTO range, will not stay. It drops to about the 1900 range after using the tractor for a few seconds. I took the dash off and found no visible springs. The only one I found are at the end of the linkage on the motor. I could add a spring but it would counter the return spring. I lubed everything but it made no difference. Any help??? Thanks

The tension on the hand throttle needs to be adjusted. I'd let the dealer take care of it.

JD It is a very simple task to "SNUG" the throttle tension. Me thinks you can get to it, I've been there, (depending on how mechanical U-R and what U have for tools) by removing the instrument panel, (if not just remove some of the Right Side cowling). You will see the big "FRICTION" springs/disks at the bottom of the lever. U only need to turn them a quarter/half a turn, or so at a time, to snugg. Then try it. This is one area U do not want any oil, they work with friction. If you have oiled them you may have to remove and clean them, if they will not hold the throttle with a firm tension on the handle. ....

If you haven't read your Operator's manual thoroughly, I suggest you do so...
My old 670 manual gives instructions for adjusting the throttle linkage ....

I had the same problem with our Deere 4300, kept snuging up the tension but did'nt seem to do much good, so took it apart and one of the friction discs was split, a new disc fixed the problem. ....

Harvey, thanks for the info. I tore it apart, cleaned the disks and reassembled. I snugged it well and have put on about 10 hrs since with no problem. It isn't very hard and I'm not a fan of returning it to the dealer. In the past I've found they somtimes mess more up than they fix. Just seems to be my luck. anyway, love this site and thanks for the help. ....
