I am in the market for a compact tractor that will handle approx. 8 acres for mowing like a yard. About an acre of this is woods which has been cleaned of all underbrush. I will also need one that can handle a rear blade & a landscape rake. What's the best choice?

Jack, The good news is that you have a lot to choose from out there. The bad news is also that you have a lot to choose from. Seriously, for the uses you have described, anything in the 20-30 HP range should fit the bill. Hydro trannys are easier to operate, but an expensive option. Also, consider getting a loader, they are just TOO handy. I'm partial to Deere (4110 HST)but you will find just as many guys who are just as happy with their Kubotas and New HOllands. Look through the post here and you will find a ton of info about the different brands. There is a wealth of knowledge in these pages. I know it helped me make an informed decision. Good luck with your search and keep us posted ....

John Deere just came out with the 2210 for about $10,000 it's really just a bigger John Deere X595. It's comprable to kubota BX series and it has 23hp engine. 54or62inch mowing deck. 540rpm rear pto, 2000rpm mid pto, Limited Cat1 3point hitch,4wheel drive, Hydrostatic transmission all of it standard. loader is comprable to 4100 series. Check out the John Deere site. some thing else I should mention try Yanmar tractor's also. They manufacture the compact tractors for John deere and you can get the 1510 which I belive is the same tractor as the 4100.For $3,750 ....
