I have a older JD655 4wd that I would like to put a BH on. From this site it looks as though a 3ph hookup works fine. I am wondering though about whether I would need a PTO pump or if the tractor hydraulics would support a hoe. Any recommendations would be great and if anybody has a used hoe in the lower Michigan area, let me know.

The pto pump for that size backhoe would be in the 5gpm range. I think it would be about equal to the tractors hydraulic system. I would not hesitate to buy either style if you do find a used one for your tractor as they are not always available. ....

The seals on the Backhoe will go out, only a matter of time. When that happens it contaminates the the Tractors hydrolic oil also. GO WITH A PTO PUMP or you will be sorry. ....

A PTO pump needs a reservoir, and the hoe will run hot if the reservoir is too small. I forget if the rule-of- thumb for reservoir size is two or two and a half time the rated pump flow--the answer is in the archives somewhere.
I run my hoe from tractor hydraulics. I'm not certain the problem of oil contamination is much worse from a hoe than from a loader, for example. I've heard of people adding additional filters to return lines if that's a concern.
