For any of you that wonder what tire is best to get, the Ag tires with the deep treads have saved my ass twice now. For some strange reason, my tractor likes to play Star Trek and "go where no man or tractor has gone before,....." and I have scared the crap out of myself where I have had to get off the tractor and work the controls standing on safe ground. Now you may wonder what the heck gets you in trouble up to your neck but it happens. I thank God for 4WD, HST , and AG tires!!

I'd like to be a little more constructive than a safety cop with a 'just don't do it' comment. I am having difficulty getting an idea of the conditions under which a tractor could be in difficulty and the ground anywhere near it would safe. A safety cop take on it almost certainly would be that there is no safe ground on which to operate a tractor even in the shed.

But then who can say? It does sound like a traction problem and ags do have more of it, although none of them are very good in serious mud or ice. It might be interesting to hear the particular conditions. It probably would be more interesting than hearing the conditions I recently heard where a person got stuck in a creek seven times in one day.

I hear you loud and clear. Have 3+ miles of trails thru woods on hillsides, and i've slid into some hair-raising situations. R1's versus R4's ??? The R4's can't compare because the R1's will hold the tractor on slippery clay. I use R4's now because I mow a lot, but miss the R1. In fact, I'm looking around for a version of R4's like the JD's Gator tires, which have an aggressive edge grip while the main tread is more turf-friendly. Any one seen tires like that?

Ag tires do offer the best traction when in the back forty. The hydro drive is one of the easiest and most dependable to use. The industrial tires have a very high load rating well beyond the tractors weight and don't have much flex so often the ground gives do to lack of bite instead of the tire producing slides or skids. ....

That is the key Art, the back forty. If you are operating on beach sand or in the high desert, Ag tires are the last choice. ....
