I have been looking to buy the following package from my neighbor:
1994 JD 1070,front assist,1670hrs, minor hood & fender damage, sat outside its entire life, faded, rotted seat, ect but suprising well maintained mechanically.
440 front end loader-average condition.
8A backhoe-barely used.
JD 6ft 3pt finish mower.
JD 5ft bush hog.
JD 660 rototiller.
He is buying the same package new this year(4710 tractor) if he can sell his used equipment.
His asking price is $25,000.
Is this a reasonable figure?

I recently saw an 870 (28hp version) with loader and backhoe in perfect condition for $18,000 (400 hrs).
The 1070 is a great tractor but it and all the accessories would have to be in near-perfect condition mechanically and cosmetically to justify the price on this rig.

A dealer near me has a 1070 right now with 1100 hrs and
loader. The machine is in good to excellent shape. He
is asking $13,500. The accessories you mentioned would
add about $10,000 to this price. But again, they would
have to be in great condition. (like new, maybe)

I'm sorry, my final vote... No bargain.

I'll ditto the wurm man, should give you a good feeling though that he is confident in the tractor's mechanical condition enough to sell to a neighbor. ....

Thanks for the input guys. I think I will offer $17500 and hope it is not an insult but it seems more in line with the your numbers and what I could gleen from machinerylink. ....

Vetjohn--I priced 1070's all winter. I'd say $12,750 for the tractor alone is absolute top price given the hours and condition. Can't speak to the rest of the equipment. I am interested in finding a Model 8A or 8B backhoe. If you do buy the 1070 and want to sell off the hoe (and if you are within transport distance to the northeast), let me know. ....

My offer of $17,500 was not enough.
Any advise on next option?
Is $20,000 still reasonable or should I look elsewhere?
Thanks your help.

The 1070 is a great tractor but if you are going to spend that kind of money have you looked at the j.d. 990 you can get into a new one of them ....tractor and loader for around 19000.00 tax included with a 430 loader, a few less horse but they are new and will have a warranty ....

Don't know what you're planning to do with the 1070, but i'll share the reason i moved on to a 4700:
I do a lot of mowing, and the terrain requires several speeds, to go up/around/down hills, to manuvuer around trees, etc. The 1070's transmission has a serious gap in speed between L3 and M1 -- the ground speed of L3 is too slow for normal mowing and M1 is too fast for manuveuring. Since engine speed has to be steady for driving the mower, I was constantly frustrated with the unproductive ground speeds that these two tranny gears ran at. I bought the 1070 for the HP and weight, but jumped at a 4700 HST as soon as I heard JD offered them.
for what it's worth...jim ....
