First of all - love this web site. Thanks Dr. Nek. I need some help! I finally have the wife letting me at least think about a compact tractor. We have 11 heavily wooded acres and a 300yrd crushed stone driveway. I am a big JD fan - stock holder for 10 years and we had their tractors growing up. I have a ton of bucket work to do - crushed stone, mulch, heavy rocks from an old stone fence and topsoil to move and grade. I also have to maintain the driveway. I have looked and driven the B7500, 4100, and the new 4110 - all hst. The 4100 has some good closeout deals right now but still does not bring it down to the price of a kubota B7500. I also got a price on the new 18.5 HP 4010 - very competitive but I think I may kick myself later becuase of horsepower (14 PTO). SO, do I go green or go for orange for a couple of thousand less? Do I go for the new Deere's 4110 with the new bells and wistles? I am looking to get a front bucket (410), rear blade and maybe 54" belly mount(my wife thinks I will look foolish cutting less than an acre with a compact tractor!) By the way is the deere 54" mower on a compact a clean cutting grooming mower? Thanks for your help!

Rod,
This compact market has gotten very confusing. I have run them all so maybe I can help with the confusion.
First, the easy question.
The 54" J.D. mower is a great finish mower. It should be everything you expect. But remember, the compacts you are interested in are heavier than let's say a John Deere 425 lawn and garden tractor, and will have a heavier footprint from the front tires than a lawnmower so it may (depending on conditions) not be quite as fine of cut.
To find the best tractor to fit your needs, you need to keep in mind what uses are most important to you. Compacts are very versitile, and as always, when desighning a machine that will do everything, you loose benifits in specific areas.
If bucket work is your biggest thrill, then concentrate on the loader. If you are mowing only an acre. You can get a L&G tractor to do the mowing for a little more than the price of the mid-mount deck aand never have to worry about taking the deck on and off. This may sound like more money and it probably is, but, I have learned that leaving the mower deck on the tractor for loader work is just plain un-handy. The deck is wider than the bucket, this causes problems. and is not a brand specific problem.
My choice would probably be a 4200 if yuo can still find one or a 4210. The reason for this is the loader. the 420 loader has much better specs. It is not much bigger in physical size and you will notice little difference in manuverability. Besides, latter on you can add a backhoe if you like.
As far as the Kubota is concerned, I think the Deeres are much more ergonomicly desighned and easier to run. I here lots of talk both ways and it's a little confusing. But I have done what most have never been able to do. I have run blue, orange and green, side by side, and for days on end. I will give you the benifit of my expierience.
No. 1) Ballast that tractor. Too much ballast when useing a
F.E.L is a good thing. too little and you may as well
use a shovel.
No. 2) No matter what tractor you buy...it will break. I
get much better support from the green dealers.
No. 3) Blue loaders are slow. and they are not any stronger
No. 4) Orange loaders are slow. and they are no stronger
than green
No. 5) My guys get in fights on who drives the green stuff.
The green stuff leaves the yard first. Then blue,
Then orange. i also get more work out of the green.
No. 6) Everything I have told you will be disputed by
someone else who owns only one tractor at a time.
