I have a small backhoe (case D-100) that came off of a case 648, the 648t does not have the power/ability to move the hoe from place to placeon rough ground or slopes greater than 10%. I have a JD F-1145 (same running gear as 855) 4wd 30+hp. I know weight will not be an issue, I currently have a 700# snowblower on the front with no counter weight on the back, I will be adding 300# counter weight on the back of the 1145 (the max that the owners manual recommends). Any suggestions on what to watch out for, tips, other ideas. The d-100 is a hevily built hoe , digs 7' deep, and easily drags the 648 around when I am using it. I am also making a additional bracket to mount the backhoe on to a skidloader. The hydraulic power will be supplied by a pump (1500 psi) and a tank that I am adding for the 1145 and the skidloader will use the aux hydraulics with a pressure relief valve set at 1500 psi. The hoe works great but I need to get it to areas that the 648 cannot get too.
thanks
paul

Paul: I'm just curious if 1500 psi is within the recommended pressure range for the hoe. I think that 1500 is the lower end of the recommended pressures for several hoes I looked at. Maybe the hoe gets its power from large cylinders and a high flow pump rather than higher pressures. ....

From the information I have on the 648 is that the pressure relief valve is set at between 1500-1700 psi and it has around a 7gpm pump at 1500 psi. the pump I am using is 8 gpm and 2000 psi (with a pressure relief valve set at 1500 psi). So far I have the bracket made for the 1145 with the pump installed, I have mounted the new oil reserve on the back of the 1145 along with a weight bar to add the weights to it. Next up is to get the pto drive to the pump set up, and get the hydraulic lines plumbed.
I also am working on the 648 to try and determine why it has such a hard time moving under load, rewiring the whole unit. I have a lot of mulch to move and the loader makes it easier to load....

There's a lot of discussion in the archives about 3ph and sub-frame mounts. You perhaps already know the stuff about 3ph mounts and potential damage to a tractor and various safety things--especially the lock-down for a 3ph mount. I’m not clear on what type mount is used, but it sounds like an interesting project.

I might do a think through about how well matched an 855 is for a powerful 7'hoe. I run a 3ph Kelley B600 from tractor hydraulics at around 8gpm and 1850 lbs. relief valve pressure. The plumbing is off a 3rd valve on my loader valve assembly, which is a power beyond type. The set-up works fine. My Ford 1710 has about 500 lbs, not including loader, and 1000 lbs more 3ph capacity than an 855. I think of the Kelley hoe as fairly modest powered hoe. I’m not sure I’d want put something with much more power on a 3ph mount.

Another thought might be about the reservoir size for the PTO pump. There is a relationship between reservoir size and the amount of work that can be done. Too small a reservoir and the oil over-heats if a hoe is worked hard. I guess that's a wait and see if it's a problem sort of issue. Hope this project works out well.

For the backhoe I had a local welder make an adapter bracket to connect to the 1145 which connects to the lift arms and when in position is bolted to the frame, this bracket also holds the hydraulic pump. The oil reservoir is 15 gallon ( rule of thumb is that it is 1 1/2 times the gpm in gallons)
For heavy digging the 648 will still be available, but for getting to some of the places for light digging I need the 4wd.

Paul: A reservoir capacity 1.5 times the pump rating is the rule of thumb that I now recall. Thanks for jogging my memory. Sounds like you've got a good handle on the project. Somebody on the SSB board is thinking about a similar project and I referred him to this discussion. ....
