We're buying a 4yr old house with a septic tile field on a flat acre near the road. Offered with the house is a Massey Ferguson 1020, 4wd, 25hp/17@PTO, dual ag tires in back. I think the current owner has run this compact tractor over the tile fields for raking leaves and moving soil and mulch. This is a fairly light tractor, with four rear tires. Will this damage a tile field? Can I use a 60 inch 3-pt finishing mower over that field or do I need to get a little lawn tractor to be sure I don't compact the tile field or crush the pipes?........Rich S.

If your septic field was properly constructed you should be OK. The pipes will be 24" down (or more) and covered with stone and dirt. I would be more concerned about the ag tires cutting up the turf when it is wet. Any evidence of damage from the current owner's mowing? 60" mower should work fine. ....

The real good setup here would be to go to turf tires. You will enjoy the Masseyso much more than a lawn tractor that I would go ahead and do the expense of the turf tires and wheels. It will not be cheap, but then you can use it allover your property without getting the soil tracks from the Ag tires. I use thissystem with a set of tire chains for deep snow and ice....Works very well. About the septic system, I can't recommend that you do any compacting over theleach field...although almost every homeowner in the world does so without anydamage (how would you know? Repairs in 15 years instead of 20??) Look at the footprint vs weight of the lawn and compact tractor. With turf tires, the loadingof the tractor on the soil may be far less with the heavier tractor! This may bethe case for the dual Ag tires as well, in fact, this may be why the DPO went toduals. The weight will not bother the pipes, which should be at 18" depth. At thatdepth the soil above forms a "bridge" and the soil - not the pipe - carries theweight. The worry is compaction. The initual soil there was probably a high sand,but over the years the grass traps fine dust and can be compacted. This is inevitable, and won't hurt anything. What kills (plugs)septic systems is PAPER,more solid items,and excessive soap in the system. Use a trash bag. ....

Yes the current owner may have caused damage, and yes continued driving on it could cause damage. It is hard to say without seeing the system. A lot depends on the soil type and the depth the system is in the ground. If the town has no records on file, then the depth that the top of the tank is in the ground will give you an idea if how deep the leach area is burried. The deeper it is the less likely to cause damage. Do not drive on it when the soil is wet. The ground is soft and it may press the pipes lower in the ground locally. Leaching areas generally have very little if any slope to them, so a local depression can disrupt the flow. ....

I built a house last year and had the septic installed by a friend who is an excavator who does mostly septic systems. He also did my finish grade and was running all over the tank and the field with his 30HP Kioti. If this guy was not worried at all then I would never be, because if there is something to worry about this will be the guy who would. ....
