I have a question for those who have bought tractors or made trades for tractors in Ohio. Today I took delivery on a John Deere 455 garden tractor. I traded in my JD 425 AWS. While going through the paperwork tonight I noticed that I was charged sales tax on the total price, on the list price at that, trade in not deducted. Is this how sales tax is supposed to be charged in Ohio? In Indiana where I live sales tax is figured on the cash difference you pay. Thanks

You should be charged the sales tax in Indiana or not at all as far as I know. It is immaterial what the tax in Ohio is. I buy out of state all the time as the closest dealers are in MS and I live in AL. ....

I'm a truck dealer in Indiana and you're right. Ohio charges sales tax on the total purchase price without regard to trades whereas Indiana charges sales tax on the cash difference only. You would have done well to have claimed exemption from Ohio tax and paid it in Indiana had that been an option the dealer would have accepted. You might want to call your accountant to see if there's any break you can get for having paid it this way. I wouldn't hold my breath, but it's worth asking about, anyhow. I hope this helps. ....

Gary I did as you said. I signed a form saying I would pay the tax in Indiana & was credited the Ohio sales tax I already paid. There was over a $300.00 difference between the tax due in Indiana & Ohio on this purchase. ....

And they call NY the land of taxes. I guess they all try and get our money, deserving or not. ....
