Attention all 4700 HST owners: Reverse pressure relief valves have weak springs. Valves open at 2,000 psi instead of 6,000 psi.My 4700 HST with 250 hours will require the tractor to be split in half to replace the PR valves. Estimated down time 10 days!!!Symptoms: 1) shudder 2) hydraulic squeel 3) no reverse when backing up a grade.Progression: 1) "C" range goes first, then "B" and finally "A". Initial JD solution, about 100 hours ago, "keep the RPM's up. Damn insulting!Tony

That down time cannot possibly be the time it takes for a mechanic to do the fix. It surely must be the shop schedule, which in some shops means fitting it in with the ag equipment, now that combine season is going strong. Sorry to hear about your 4700 problem, but S--- happens to the best of us, frustrating as that is. ....

Kay, You are correct. The service manager told me to bring the tractor to his shop early Monday morning. The mechanic did not start on my tractor until Thursday. Apparently, the Hydrostatic Transmission is difficult to remove from the tractor, (check the maintenance manual). The replacement parts are on order and will arrive next Monday. The service manager estimates that the tractor will be finished late next Tuesday.
Tony,
BTW: I received a call from the JD customer serice rep. today. She listened to my complaints. However, she has the impression that the 4700 has few problems. Call JD at 1-800-537-8233,if you are having problems. They need input from 4700 owners to fix problems. ( i.e. exhaust fumes, loader DSCV location, etc.)

Tony: You'll have to pardon my gloom and doom outlook, but I'd be nervous that fresh copies of the same old pressure relief valves that failed will be installed. If JD doesn't think there's actually a problem with the valve's design or performance, your problem is probably declared a random "parts failure." You get a new set of valves that will fail again ... sooner or later. I hope your problem WAS just a random failure with a permanent fix. Of course, all of us with any JD HST will now be watching our tractors like a hawk for the symptoms you described. I know I will. ....

Bernie, I agree! I will do an initial test of the tractor at the dealer. If the problem is apparently "fixed", I will then duplicate the conditions which caused the PRV's to fail before. I will keep you all advised.

Hello Murph,
I am a lovely shade of purple at this point. I feel like my JD Green 4700 is changing to Lemon Yellow!
Tony,

IT'S FIXED!!! Swash plate bearing failure contaminated the HST. New HST installed under warranty. A split 4700 is not a pretty sight.
