You men! Tim Allen is right, MORE POWER say's my husband. He has a 1000 cc snowmobile, but " thinks it can go faster" Oh yeah, he's into bikes,me too, My 250 honda interceptor goes 105 and that will get you in jail! He won't ride it in case someone sees him on it! Well, I talked him into buying a used garden tractor for our place, 9 acres and 2 acre lawn. He decided to buy a kubota, The dealer let us try it out, and my husband loved it! four wheel drive, automatic ,three cylinder, loader, mower,UNTIL my husband found out it made ONLY just under 20 hp!! Well, the dealer explained to us about the power of a diesel 3cyl, compared to a big twin gas engine and how most guys buy way to much hp to be macho, and because the dealer makes more on larger models, Anyway, Is this true or dealer hype? Thanks for reading a woman's ranting, Anna.

That 20 HP diesel with 4 whl drive will suck the socks off any gas powered tractor in the garden/lawn tractor categoryin any application calling for ground engaging equipment.Tell him to wait till they try to push two feet of wet snow with their puney, designer, gas fired overtuned lawn mowers and fail miserably. That 3 cyl diesel exhaust is pure testosterone. Plus the extra impplements he can get (auger, logging boom, tiller, log splitter, cement mixer, turf plow, harrowsdiscs, fertilizer spreader (salt for winter too), box blade, york rakeand a whole lot of other stuff.Short answer is that all hp isn't created equal and think of all the attachments ....

I have an 18 hp garden tractor and a 21 hp 4wd diesel compact. I can pick my garden tractor up with the boom pole on my real tractor and run down the road faster than my garden tractor will go flat out. I have a blade for both. The garden tractor has weights on the rear wheels, a length of railroad track bolted on and chains. It still spins if I try to push snow and dirt - what a joke. I have used my real tractor to pull cars out of snowdrifts. My garden tractor mows 44" at a time. My real tractor brush hogs 5' and will finish mow more (I have a 5' mower). Get the picture? ....

Yes that diesel will pull the frame out of that gas engine. Just look at pickup trucks. I have a ford power stoke diesel the v10 has more horse power but my diesel has a larger towing rating more power were it is needed! They also should out last a gas engine and better on Fuel the best of both worlds. And 4 wheel drive is better than 2 wheel drive off road! ....

Anna,The other posts are right on. A large - as in out on the great plains pro farm, qualifies as heavy construction equipment - tractor is "only" in the neighborhood of 200 hp. That is about the same hp as a moderate sized tractor trailer truck engine. Such a machine will pull a 60,000 pounds loaded trailer with ease. A 20 hp machine can pull 6,000 pound loaded trailer with similar ease (just not at highway speed, only because of the gearing not being there).A 20 hp tractor is likely to be more than sufficient for most serious home use. It will pull away a suprisingly large tree if you decide to cut one down or (as someone else said) pick up a lawn tractor and carry it somewhere. I've seen that done! While small in the scheme of real tractors, they are definately real tractors and have the disposition to do some suprisingly difficult work (or damage!!!). The machine is likely to weigh as much as a small car. It is among the ultimate in tools if your husband is into them. Don't let the hp turn him off. That is a fraction of the story. When I got mine last year, you should have seen some of the tool heads at work practically drool!Lee ....

I have a garden 18.5 tractor with all the stuff that goes with it. Plow, dise, box blade. gas engine, runs and works great. does all the small stuff around the house and cuts the grass. Ag wheels and with 50lb added to each. Its not bad for small work and I still love it. Do not want to sell it. I also have a 20hp kubota. As the guy said it will pick up the 18.5 hp garden tractor and will out work it so bad that its not worth even talking about. The only problem is that a new garden tractor goes for $2500 new and I guess you know what the 20hp one goes for. If i had it all to do over I would not have gotten the garden one with all the stuff i have with it now. (I also have all the stuff that goes with the 20hp K. It may be compact but its a real tractor and will do a real days work for a person, and still be able to work the next day.I broke a set of ramps loading it and each ramp was rated at 1000lb each.)not to smart on my part, but lets you know the size of the 20hp to the 18.5hp.the 16hp kubota's will do a fine job for any one in most places. thats the b7300Mine is a L, but its setup as a farm tractor. Also more land has been worked with a small alles or jd than you will ever know.Hope the 'old man" has fun with his, I have, My wife says if she would have know it would keep me at home, she would have gotten me one years ago. And as far as toys go, 2 HD's, 4 seater plane, hang glider, and 2 old jeeps, a 47 and a 50. all in all i would keep the 50 jeep and my kubota and all the other stuff can go........Love the Dirt...rick. ....
