I am looking to add gauges to my JD-950. I have lived with the "idiot lights" only long enough. Has anyone had an experience they could share regarding the installtion of gauges on a compact tractor? Any pointers you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance Mark.

Mark, I purchased a set of gauges from Walmart to add to my JD4100Hydro. It's one of those three-in-one sets, has water temp, oil pressure, charging current. I got busy with other projects, haven't had a chance to install them yet. I did very thoroughly check where they are going, the range of the gauges, etc. so I won't have any problem installing them or with them operating properly. I do plan to remove them from the litle metal bracket that came with them, and mount them individually. They are typical automotive type gauges, 2 inch diameter, and as I recall, the set cost about $20. Looks like they have all the Tee fittings, etc. so I don't expect to spend any more putting them in, other than my time. It's a pretty straight-forward project, with the exception perhaps of cutting the mounting holes. If you don't want to cut holes, you can just leave them in the metal bracket they come with and find a good place to mount it. Visit WalMart, and look in the Automotive accessories (running lights, switches, etc.) department. HTH ....

I did the same thing that Dave is going to do, but in two different ways. My first gauge set came from VDO-Bosch using their big high-dollar gauges in their rubber block mount. It used their well-proven electric senders and was a flop. The gauges were inaccurate and did not repeat well. All fittings were extra $. The rubber mounting block - I am still embarrassed by what I paid for that piece - lasted a year and a half and then the rubber split and cracked, spilling the gauges out by their leads. Poor quality engineering and materials throughout. VDO was not interested in talking about their product. Worse yet, I still didn't have a coherent picture of how my tractor was performing.
Then I bought a $20 dollar 3 gauge set...I think I got it at the 7-11. All it says is "made in Taiwan". Sounds just like Dave's. The temperature uses a capillary tube and the pressure uses a nylon tube filled with oil. No electricity required. I mounted the metal bracket under the dash with two screws, connected up the leads with the adapters and hardware (all included) , and was in business. No problems. Measurements are very repeatable and make sense when I check them against other instruments. I only hooked up the temperature and pressure. Meant to hook up the ammeter, but put it off till tomorrow. I think that was ten years ago or so.........
Later I came back and made up some "T" adapters so that I could run the idiot lights and the gauges at the same time. This required some heat-scratching to match the various threads. I ended up cutting up several brass fittings and reassembling them with silver braze. ....
